Phoenix man arrested after allegedly pointing laser at aircraft: police

19:59 24.12.2023

A 35-year-old man named William Hill has been arrested by the Phoenix Police Department in connection with an alarming incident involving a laser pointer and commercial aircraft. The Phoenix Police Department issued a statement, identifying Hill as the suspect responsible for shooting a laser pointer at planes just moments before their scheduled landing at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport. The incident occurred on Thursday, shortly before 5:30 p.m.

According to the police, Hill continued to target a Phoenix police helicopter with the laser pointer as patrol officers arrived at the scene. Law enforcement officers subsequently seized a laser from Hill's residence and promptly booked him into the Maricopa County jail on two felony charges of aiming a laser pointer at an occupied aircraft. The Phoenix Police Department's swift response to the incident is commendable, as the potential dangers posed by such reckless behavior cannot be overstated.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has also released a statement regarding this concerning incident. The FAA confirmed that the flight crew of Southwest Airlines Flight 2418 reported being illuminated by a green laser near Phoenix, Arizona, around 8:30 p.m. local time on Thursday, December 21. The FAA promptly notified local authorities and assured the public that a thorough investigation into the matter is currently underway.

This incident serves as yet another reminder of the growing issue of laser strikes on aircraft. The FAA, highlighting the seriousness of these occurrences, revealed that pilots reported a staggering 9,500 laser strikes to the FAA in 2022 alone. Even more alarming is the fact that 278 pilots have reported injuries resulting from laser strikes since 2010. The FAA warned that those who shine lasers at aircraft could face fines of up to $11,000 for each violation and up to $30,800 for multiple incidents. In fact, the FAA imposed fines totaling $120,000 for laser strikes in 2021, underscoring their commitment to combat this dangerous trend.

In addition to targeting commercial aircraft, authorities have now disclosed that William Hill also directed the laser towards a police helicopter. Such blatant disregard for public safety is deeply concerning and further highlights the need for stricter measures to deter individuals from engaging in such hazardous behaviors.

As the investigation into this incident continues, it is crucial for authorities to send a strong message that endangering the lives of airline passengers, flight crews, and law enforcement personnel will not be tolerated. The potential consequences of laser strikes on aircraft cannot be overstated, as they can lead to temporary blindness and other vision-related issues for pilots, jeopardizing the safety of everyone on board.

The arrest of William Hill serves as a significant step towards holding individuals accountable for their actions, and it is hoped that this incident will raise awareness about the serious consequences of targeting aircraft with laser pointers. The safety and well-being of those who travel through the skies should remain a top priority, and it is essential that individuals understand the severe repercussions they may face if they engage in such dangerous activities.
