In a shocking case of animal cruelty and neglect, a 48-year-old woman from Frostproof, Florida, has been arrested after authorities discovered a horrifying scene at her residence. The Polk County Sheriff's Office received a report about a possible "hoarder situation" involving cats inside the house, prompting a welfare check on the 75-year-old woman living there.

On December 21st, a deputy arrived at the property and met Lisa Lacharite, who claimed to be her mother's caregiver. Lacharite requested that the officer wait outside while she fetched her mother. However, during the wait, the deputy noticed a pungent smell of ammonia emanating from the premises, raising concerns.

After approximately 15 minutes, Lacharite returned and allowed the deputy to enter the house. The officer was immediately overwhelmed by the overpowering stench of ammonia, which became stronger as he delved further inside. What he encountered was truly disturbing.

Inside the enclosed porch, the deputy discovered wire cages filled with around 75 malnourished and sick chickens, peacocks, and ducks. These animals appeared to be suffering due to neglect and poor living conditions. However, the real horrors awaited inside the main house itself.

Upon entering, the officer was confronted with the sight of approximately 50 cats roaming freely throughout the residence. They were seen climbing on furniture and even sitting on kitchen counters. It was evident that these animals had been living in deplorable conditions and were in desperate need of help.

Recognizing the severity of the situation, additional deputies and emergency crews were summoned to the scene. Members of the Polk County Fire and Rescue team conducted air quality assessments, specifically measuring the levels of ammonia present. Shockingly, the results showed readings ranging between 70 and 100 parts per million (ppm), significantly surpassing the hazardous threshold of 50 ppm.

Authorities explained that exposure to such high levels of ammonia could be lethal not only for the animals but also for humans. Recognizing the immediate danger, Lacharite's elderly mother was promptly removed from the premises to ensure her safety and health.

Confronted with the evidence against her, Lisa Lacharite was arrested on multiple charges, including five counts of animal cruelty, 304 counts of animal neglect, and one count of neglecting an elder. She was subsequently transported to Polk County Jail.

During questioning, Lacharite allegedly acknowledged the deplorable conditions and admitted to being overwhelmed by the sheer number of animals under her care. She expressed regret for her inability to manage the situation effectively.

In light of these distressing events, all the seized animals will be undergoing thorough evaluations by veterinarians to assess their physical and mental well-being. Once deemed fit, efforts will be made to find these innocent creatures new loving homes, where they can finally receive the care and attention they deserve.
