Woman missing in Alaska river after attempting dog rescue

07:36 26.12.2023

Alaska State Troopers plan to resume their search on Tuesday for a missing woman who bravely jumped into a frozen river to save her dog. The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon, along the North Fork Eagle River Trail, approximately 20 miles from Anchorage, Alaska.

According to Austin McDaniel, the communications director of the Alaska State Troopers, the woman and a man were walking along the trail when their dog suddenly went into the water. Without hesitation, they both rushed in to rescue the distressed canine. Tragically, the woman entered a patch of open water on the Eagle River and disappeared beneath the ice. The male companion was the last person to see her.

Authorities conducted an extensive search effort on Saturday until sunset, and then resumed the operation on Christmas Eve. Divers were deployed to cut through the ice and utilize sonar devices in hopes of locating the missing woman. However, their efforts were futile, and the woman's identity remains undisclosed.

Expressing his condolences, Austin McDaniel referred to the incident as a "tragic event" and emphasized the law enforcement's commitment to finding her, stating, "so the family can have some closure." He also urged the public to exercise caution when venturing onto frozen waterways due to the unpredictable conditions caused by the unusual winter weather experienced in Southcentral Alaska. McDaniel warned that heavy snowfall could mask thin ice, increasing the risk of accidents.

The North Fork Eagle River Trail, where the incident occurred, is known for its picturesque views, but it can also be treacherous during winter months. The trailhead is located approximately 20 miles northeast of downtown Anchorage, and the Eagle River flows northwest in the region, eventually reaching the Cook Inlet.

As the search operation resumes on Tuesday, authorities are determined to find the missing woman and bring closure to her family. The brave actions that led to her disappearance serve as a reminder of the dangers lurking beneath the ice, urging caution to those who venture onto frozen lakes, rivers, and other waterways.
