Cardinals stun Eagles, reshaping NFC playoff race

17:28 31.12.2023

In a stunning turn of events, the Arizona Cardinals rallied from a 15-point deficit to defeat the Philadelphia Eagles 35-31 on Sunday, severely impacting the Eagles' playoff hopes. Former Eagles defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon, now the head coach of the Cardinals, returned to Philadelphia and secured his biggest win yet.

The Cardinals, who have struggled this season with a 4-12 record, managed to disrupt the Eagles' path to the playoffs. This loss marked the Eagles' fourth defeat this month and their second at home, dealing a significant blow to their standing in the NFC. With wins against Arizona and the New York Giants next week, the Eagles could have clinched the NFC East. However, their loss now opens the door for the Dallas Cowboys to win the division with a victory against the Washington Commanders next week.

The game was a rollercoaster of emotions, with both teams fighting hard to secure the win. Jalen Hurts, the Eagles' quarterback, threw three touchdown passes but was intercepted in the end zone on a desperate heave to end the game. The Eagles' performance throughout the game reflected a team that seemed more likely to be eliminated early in the playoffs rather than one capable of making a second consecutive trip to the Super Bowl.

The Cardinals mounted an impressive comeback, erasing a 21-6 halftime deficit with two touchdown passes from Kyler Murray in the third quarter, tying the game at 21-all. Hurts managed to put the Eagles ahead in the fourth quarter with a 9-yard touchdown pass to Dallas Goedert. However, the Eagles' defense failed to hold on, allowing the Cardinals to tie the game 28-28 with 5:26 left after a pass interference penalty against cornerback Kelee Ringo.

Murray then connected with Michael Wilson for a 5-yard touchdown, giving the Cardinals three touchdowns on three possessions in the second half. The Eagles managed to take the lead once more with a field goal from Jake Elliott, but Murray had enough time to maneuver the Cardinals into scoring position. A 36-yard completion to Greg Dorch set up James Conner's game-winning 2-yard touchdown run with just 32 seconds remaining.

The Cardinals' victory, though not impacting their playoff chances, had significant implications for the NFC seeding. The San Francisco 49ers now hold the No. 1 seed due to their win over the Washington Commanders and the Eagles' loss. The Eagles are still in contention for the No. 2 seed, but the Dallas Cowboys have the opportunity to claim the NFC East and secure that seed with a win against the Commanders next week.

Murray finished the game with three touchdown passes and one interception, throwing for 232 yards on 25-of-31 passing, while also rushing for 24 yards. Conner had an outstanding performance with 128 rushing yards, including the game-winning touchdown, and one receiving touchdown. On the Eagles' side, Hurts completed 18-of-23 passes for 167 yards and three touchdowns, two of which were caught by Julio Jones on his only two receptions of the game.

The Eagles now face a crucial matchup against the New York Giants in the final week of the regular season, hoping for a victory while relying on the Commanders to defeat the Cowboys to retain their playoff hopes. The loss to the Cardinals serves as a wake-up call for the Eagles, highlighting the need for improvements in their offense, running game, and defense if they hope to make a deep playoff run.
