Blinken Visits Middle East to Prevent Escalation of Gaza War

09:33 09.01.2024

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is currently on a week-long trip to the Middle East, where he is working to prevent the Gaza conflict from spreading and advocating for a political solution for the Palestinians. During a press conference at Al Ula airport in Saudi Arabia, Blinken emphasized the need for unity and integration in the region, stating that the West Bank and Gaza should be united under Palestinian-led governance. He stressed the importance of establishing an independent Palestinian state for the future of the region.

Following talks with Blinken, Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman also expressed the need to halt military operations in Gaza and create conditions for peace and stability. Local media reported that this effort aims to ensure the Palestinian people obtain their legitimate rights and achieve a just and lasting peace.

Blinken's trip includes meetings with various leaders in the region, including United Arab Emirates President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and senior officials from Saudi Arabia. He plans to push for more humanitarian aid to Gaza and increased protection for civilians during his discussions with Israeli officials. Blinken also intends to address efforts to secure the release of remaining hostages and prevent the conflict from spreading to other parts of the region.

When asked about the US-led talks to normalize relations between Saudi Arabia and Israel, Blinken acknowledged the interest in pursuing this goal but highlighted that it would require an end to the conflict in Gaza and a practical pathway to a Palestinian state. Saudi Arabia has paused diplomatic talks with Israel amid the ongoing military conflict between Hamas militants and Israeli forces.

The situation in the region remains tense, with recent events indicating a possible widening of the conflict. An Israeli airstrike in southern Lebanon killed a key Hezbollah commander, and Blinken emphasized the importance of preventing an escalation outside of Gaza. Both Hamas and Hezbollah, backed by Iran, have been carrying out attacks against Israel, with Iran's militant allies in Syria, Iraq, and Yemen also involved.

During his trip, Blinken has met with Jordan's King Abdullah II and Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, where he emphasized the need for Israel to limit civilian casualties and increase humanitarian aid to Gaza. King Abdullah warned of the catastrophic repercussions of Israel's war in Gaza and called on the US to press for an immediate cease-fire.

Blinken also visited a World Food Program warehouse in Jordan, where aid is being prepared for famished Palestinians in Gaza. He commended the efforts to distribute food to those in need and reiterated the US's commitment to opening access routes into Gaza and providing assistance.

The conflict in Gaza began when Hamas fighters crossed into southern Israel, prompting Israel to launch a military campaign to eliminate the group. The terror attack resulted in around 1,200 deaths and approximately 240 captives. Gaza health officials report that nearly 23,000 Palestinians, including many women and children, have been killed in Israel's offensive.

The United States has consistently opposed forcibly removing Palestinians from Gaza and is working on a postwar road map for the Palestinian territories. The goal is to prevent Gaza from becoming a launching pad for terrorist attacks against Israel and to reunite Gaza and the West Bank under Palestinian leadership, excluding Hamas from any future role.

Blinken's visit to Israel includes meetings with key Israeli officials, including President Isaac Herzog, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, opposition leader Benny Gantz, and members of the Israeli war cabinet. The United States continues to urge Israel to shift to smaller scale military operations in Gaza but supports Israel's refusal to agree to a cease-fire demanded by Arab nations.

Overall, Blinken's trip aims to de-escalate tensions in the region, facilitate humanitarian aid to Gaza, and work towards a political solution that ensures the rights and independence of the Palestinian people.
