U.S. Personnel Injured in Iranian-Backed Missile Attack on Iraq Airbase

20:00 20.01.2024

US personnel suffered minor injuries during an attack on the Ain Al-Asad airbase in western Iraq on Saturday, according to reports. The base, which hosts US and other international military troops, was targeted by at least a dozen missiles. While 13 of the projectiles were shot down, two fell on the airbase, causing damage. The individuals injured were not immediately identified. The Islamic Resistance in Iraq, a coalition of Iran-backed militia groups, claimed responsibility for the attack. This comes as tensions continue to rise in the Middle East following Israel's war with Tehran-backed Hamas.

In addition to the American personnel injuries, a member of Iraq's security forces was severely wounded during the strike. Since October 7, Tehran proxy militia forces have attacked the US military 58 times in Iraq and 83 times in Syria. The US has 900 troops stationed in Syria and another 2,500 in Iraq to advise local forces on how to prevent the resurgence of the Islamic State. The Iraqi government is concerned about becoming a battleground between the US, Israel, and Iran.

Following a US drone strike in Baghdad, the Iraqi government announced that it was in the process of evicting American forces from the country. The Pentagon, however, stated that it has not received any formal word from Baghdad about its troops being removed and that it was in Iraq at the invitation of the Iraqi government.

Meanwhile, Iran launched ballistic missiles at targets in both Iraq and Syria, confirming the rising tensions between the US and Iran. The US and Iraq condemned the strikes that hit close to the under-construction US consulate in the northern Iraqi city of Erbil. The Pentagon also seized a boatload of advanced conventional weapons sent from Iran to Yemen-based Houthi rebels.

This attack on the Ain Al-Asad airbase serves as a reminder of the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and the risks faced by US personnel stationed in the region. The situation remains tense as the US, Israel, and Iran continue to engage in hostilities, with Iraq caught in the middle.
