Authorities in West Virginia have made a shocking discovery nearly 24 years after a mother and daughter disappeared. The remains believed to be those of Susan and Natasha “Alex” Carter were found buried in the backyard of Larry Webb's home, the man who allegedly confessed to shooting and killing them nearly two decades ago. Webb, who was in his 80s, was being held without bond at the Mount Olive Correctional Complex after being arrested earlier this month in connection with Alex's death. However, he suffered a medical episode and passed away hours before the remains were discovered.

The case dates back to August when Susan and Alex Carter went missing. Susan was in a custody battle with Alex's father at the time and had reportedly told him he would never see his daughter again. The Carters were living at Webb's home when they disappeared, and Webb allegedly shot Susan after noticing his finances were out of order. He then confessed to shooting Alex to avoid detection for killing Susan.

Investigators had been working on the case for years, executing search warrants at Webb's home and recovering evidence in the process. Webb had previously denied any involvement in the disappearance of the Carters, claiming he couldn't remember due to his dementia. However, a recent deathbed confession led authorities to the bodies of Susan and Alex.

Rick Lafferty, Alex's father, expressed mixed emotions during a news conference, calling it a sad day but also a happy one because he could finally bring his daughter home. Raleigh County Prosecutor Ben Hatfield described the discovery as a "bit of a poetic ending" that even he couldn't have written. The bodies have been sent to the state medical examiner's office for autopsies as the investigation continues.

The confession by Webb, who had been indicted for murder in Alex's death last October, provided authorities with the information they needed to locate the bodies. Despite the challenges faced due to Webb's declining health, investigators were able to find closure for the Carters' family after nearly 24 years of uncertainty.
