Tennessee lawmakers approve bill allowing teachers to carry concealed guns in schools

16:54 24.04.2024

In a controversial move, the Republican-led Legislature in Tennessee has approved a bill that would allow some public school teachers to carry concealed guns into the classroom. This decision comes just over a year after a tragic shooting at a private Christian elementary school in Nashville, where three children and three adults were killed. The legislation, which is now awaiting Republican Gov. Bill Lee's signature, would require teachers and staff to obtain a permit, pass a background check, receive mental health clearance, and complete 40 hours of training in basic school policing.

This new measure has sparked heated debate and protests, with some demonstrators chanting "Blood on your hands" at Tennessee House Republicans after the bill was passed. The bill would also prevent parents and other teachers from knowing which staff members are armed, only allowing disclosure to school administrators and police. The proposal represents a significant expansion of gun access in the state, and a departure from Gov. Lee's previous push for measures to keep guns away from those deemed a danger to themselves or others.

This move in Tennessee is part of a larger trend across the country, with Republican-led legislatures in states like Iowa, Nebraska, Kentucky, South Dakota, and Utah passing measures to expand gun rights in schools. These efforts stand in contrast to Democratic-led states like Colorado, Maine, and Vermont, where lawmakers are pushing for greater restrictions on firearms. In Maine, for example, new laws have been passed to impose waiting periods for gun purchases, expand background checks, and ban devices that convert semi-automatic firearms into rapid-firing weapons.

The debate over gun control and public safety policies continues to divide the nation, with lawmakers in different states taking contrasting approaches to address the issue of gun violence. As the discussion unfolds, the question remains: which measures will ultimately prove most effective in ensuring the safety of students and communities across the country?
