"House of Cards" star Kevin Spacey took the stand on Thursday in his ongoing sexual assault trial in London. Spacey is facing charges of sexual assault, indecent assault, and causing a person to engage in penetrative sexual activity without consent, stemming from allegations involving four different men. During his testimony, Spacey denied violently groping one of his accusers and instead described their relationship as “intimate” and "somewhat sexual." He expressed disbelief that the man would accuse him 20 years later, stating, "I never thought that the man I knew would stab me in the back." The accuser had alleged that Spacey had forcefully grabbed his crotch, almost causing an accident while they were driving. Spacey presented evidence that he was working in Australia during the time of the alleged incident, contradicting the victim"s claim that it occurred in 2004 or 2005 while they were driving to Elton John"s gala. The actor insisted that he had only attended the event in 2001. The testimonies of the alleged victims contradicted Spacey"s description of their encounters. They claimed that he caught them off guard and aggressively grabbed their privates through their clothing. One of the accusers compared Spacey"s actions to a cobra striking. Prosecutors described Spacey as a "sexual bully" during the trial"s opening statements, alleging that he did not respect personal boundaries. Defense lawyer Patrick Gibbs suggested that the alleged victims had ulterior motives and that Spacey had become a target after coming out as gay in 2017. Spacey"s trial began on June 28 and is expected to last approximately four weeks. The Oscar-winning actor has pleaded not guilty to all 12 charges against him. He first faced allegations of sexual misconduct in 2017 when actor Anthony Rapp accused him of assaulting him at a party in the 1980s.
