Manchin and Huntsman unite for potential 'unity' ticket in 2024

17:43 18.07.2023

No Labels, a third-party bipartisan group, is set to host a major event on Monday to discuss its platform and will be joined by two notable politicians from different parties. Democratic Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia and former Republican Governor Jon Huntsman Jr. of Utah will speak at the group's "Common Sense town hall" at Saint Anselm College in Manchester, New Hampshire. This event is being described as the first public opportunity to highlight the group's policies.

Both Manchin and Huntsman could potentially represent what a No Labels ticket could look like in the upcoming presidential election. Manchin has not closed the door to running for president and has been known for his moderate stance within the Democratic Party. The event on Monday, however, is not the debut of a No Labels ticket, and the group hopes that any candidates chosen would conform to their new platform.

Over the weekend, No Labels released a policy manual called Common Sense, which outlines the party's platform and draws direct contrasts with President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump. The manual includes 30 policy ideas organized into 10 categories, offering brief solutions to issues such as Social Security, the national debt, abortion access, guns, and education. Some of the proposals include universal background checks for gun purchases, limits on abortion rather than bans, and securing the southern border while protecting "Dreamers." The manual takes inspiration from Thomas Paine's Revolutionary War-era pamphlet and aims to be an optimistic and triumphant voice for America's commonsense majority.

No Labels hopes that these ideas will help popularize a centrist third-party White House run and spark a national conversation about solving issues that most Americans care about. At Monday's town hall, Manchin and Huntsman are expected to discuss issues from the policy manual as well as their own histories. No Labels plans to schedule a yearlong tour with more speakers to come.

While the group aims to attract moderate Democrats and Republicans, it has faced criticism from figures in both parties. Some argue that No Labels has no legitimate shot at third-party success and could instead act as a spoiler in the race by peeling off voters from another candidate. Former Alabama Democratic Senator Doug Jones, a staunch Biden ally, has joined a group to counter No Labels and believes there is no way they can secure 270 electoral votes.

Former Connecticut Senator Joe Lieberman, a Democrat-turned-independent and the founding chair of No Labels, disagrees with this perspective. He believes that the American people are not satisfied with what the two major parties are offering and that a third choice is necessary. Lieberman stated that if polling next year shows that No Labels could help elect one of the major party candidates, they will not get involved.

No Labels has been working on a potential ticket by conducting polls and running models across the country. So far, they have been successful in gaining nationwide ballot access in five states. However, critics, including Greg Schneiders, who worked for President Jimmy Carter and now conducts polling for the anti-No Labels group, argue that their plan is "fantastical and not credible."

The debate over a potential third-party candidacy also took place on Sunday between Joe Lieberman and Doug Jones. Lieberman emphasized the need for a third choice, while Jones argued that No Labels would ultimately serve as a spoiler in the race.

The upcoming town hall event and the potential candidacy of Joe Manchin have generated significant interest and speculation in the political landscape. As a critical early-voting state in the 2024 presidential primary elections, New Hampshire holds importance in shaping the narrative of the upcoming election. Manchin's attendance at the No Labels event has sparked rumors that he may be considering a third-party run, adding further intrigue to the evolving political landscape.
