Dan Snyder fined $60M by NFL in misconduct investigation

11:22 21.07.2023

Washington Commanders owner Dan Snyder has been ordered to pay a $60 million fine to the NFL after an investigation found that the club had improperly hidden finances and that Snyder had inappropriately touched a former cheerleader. The report, released by the league on Thursday, stated that the investigation had sustained the allegations of sexual harassment and deliberate underreporting of NFL revenues by the club. The investigation, led by former U.S. attorney and SEC chair Mary Jo White, included interviews with 44 witnesses and reviews of thousands of documents. The report outlined a pattern of deliberate steps taken by the Commanders to conceal revenue from the NFL, including the use of a "second set of books." The investigation found that the Commanders had concealed over $45 million in revenue sharing. Snyder and the club have denied any wrongdoing. The report also concluded that Snyder had inappropriately touched a former cheerleader at a dinner and tried to push her into his limo. The report stated that the investigators found the evidence insufficient to demonstrate Snyder's involvement in the financial misconduct, but sustained the allegations of sexual harassment. As part of the resolution, Snyder is expected to pay $60 million to the NFL and all outstanding matters. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell stated that the conduct substantiated in the report has no place in the NFL and that the league strives for safe, respectful, and professional workplaces. The news of the financial misconduct and sexual harassment findings coincided with the approval of Snyder's sale of the Commanders to a group led by Philadelphia 76ers owner Josh Harris. Snyder's ownership tenure has been plagued with issues, including allegations of interference in a separate NFL investigation into sexual harassment by team executives. Attorneys representing former Commanders employees called the report a vindication for their clients and questioned why the NFL allowed Snyder to retain ownership despite being aware of the allegations against him.
