Senator Demands Investigation into Hunter Biden's Defense Team for Unethical Conduct

06:26 30.07.2023

Senator Pete Ricketts (R-Neb.) has called for an investigation into Hunter Biden's legal team, accusing them of deceiving court officials in order to have key documents pulled from public view. The request for an investigation comes after Delaware US District Judge Maryellen Noreika expressed concerns about the apparent misrepresentations made by Hunter Biden's legal team in his tax case. The judge's order, released on Friday, stated that she had concerns about the actions of attorney Chris Clark and his colleague Jessica Bengels, accusing them of deceiving the clerk's office to have the House Ways and Means Committee's amicus brief taken down.

House Ways and Means Committee chief counsel Theodore Kittila accused Bengels of misrepresenting her identity and falsely claiming to be from his firm to convince the clerk's office to remove the committee's filing. In response to these allegations, Senator Ricketts wrote a letter to the courts in New York and Washington DC, calling for swift action to examine the actions of attorneys Christopher Clark and Jessica L. Bengels. Ricketts emphasized the importance of ethics in the legal profession and expressed concerns about the potential crossing of ethical lines in this case.

Hunter Biden's legal team responded to the accusations, stating that it was an unfortunate and unintentional miscommunication between a staff member at their firm and the court employees. Despite the uncertainty surrounding the exact details of the matter, Ricketts believes that an investigation is necessary to ensure accountability and uphold the integrity of the justice system.

The filing by the House Ways and Means Committee, which included transcribed interviews alleging high-level interference in the Hunter Biden probe, had already been available to the public for months before being taken down. Clark and his colleague Richard Jones filed a motion to seal the committee's filing, arguing that it contained grand jury materials and taxpayer information that should be protected from disclosure.

The judge's order came shortly after Hunter Biden's proposed plea bargain, in which he pleaded not guilty to two misdemeanor counts of willful failure to pay taxes and entered a diversion program on a felony federal weapons charge.

Senator Ricketts, in an interview with Fox News Digital, expressed his concerns about the possible weaponization of the justice system against President Biden's political opponents while his son receives preferential treatment. He emphasized the need for accountability and the restoration of trust in the justice system, particularly in light of the mishandling of recent cases by the Biden administration.

In response to the judge's order, Senator Ricketts called for a disciplinary inquiry into Hunter Biden's legal team and urged the courts in New York and Washington DC to initiate an ethics investigation into the actions of Christopher Clark and Jessica Bengels. Ricketts believes that regardless of who made the call to the clerk, the circumstances surrounding the incident demand a thorough investigation.

Judge Noreika's order also addressed the need for respectful treatment of court officials, stating that she will not tolerate any ill-use, disrespect, or lies directed towards the clerk's office. She emphasized the hard work and dedication of these employees and called for any issues or inquiries regarding the case to be raised directly with her rather than the clerk's office.

The Ways and Means Committee has been given until Monday to respond to Clark and Jones' motion to seal the amicus brief. The judge's order highlights the importance of protecting grand jury materials and taxpayer information and expresses concerns about the potential prejudice to the defendant if such information is published on the public docket.

Overall, the request for an investigation into Hunter Biden's legal team, the accusations of misrepresentation, and the judge's order have raised questions about the integrity of the justice system and the need for accountability in high-profile cases. The outcome of the investigation and the response from the New York Departmental Disciplinary Committee and the District of Columbia's Office of Disciplinary Counsel will determine the next steps in this ongoing controversy.
