Tragic plane crash in rural Virginia claims 5 lives, including child

08:43 11.03.2024

A tragic plane crash in a wooded area near Virginia's western border has left five people dead, including a child, after the twin-engine IAI Astra 1125 burst into flames upon impact. The crash occurred near Ingalls Field Airport in Hot Springs, Virginia, around 3 p.m. on Sunday. Virginia State Police confirmed that the pilot and three other adults, along with a child, were killed in the crash.

Authorities reported that the small private jet was attempting to make an emergency landing when it ran short of the runway, hit several trees, and crashed into a nearby hillside, causing a brush fire. The fire was quickly extinguished, but the crash site was described as small and completely burnt, making it difficult to identify the aircraft's tail numbers.

The National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration are now investigating the incident to determine the flight details and identify the occupants. The plane was reportedly flying from Fort Lauderdale and was not scheduled to land at Ingalls Field. The small airport was closed following the crash as emergency responders and investigators worked at the scene.

Hot Springs, located near Virginia's border with West Virginia, is approximately 160 miles northwest of Richmond. The community is in shock following this devastating tragedy, and the investigation into the crash remains ongoing as authorities work to piece together what led to the fatal incident.
