Brave Woman Escapes Accused Kidnapper's Garage Prison

07:25 04.08.2023

In a shocking and disturbing case that has sent shockwaves through the state, an Oregon man has been arrested for the heinous crimes of kidnapping and sexually assaulting a woman. The suspect, identified as Negasi Zuberi, a 29-year-old resident of Klamath Falls, was apprehended by the FBI's Portland field office after the courageous victim managed to escape from his garage and seek help from a passing motorist.

According to authorities, this terrifying ordeal began on July 15 when Zuberi traveled to Seattle to pick up a sex worker. Posing as an undercover police officer, he approached the victim and threatened her with a taser before handcuffing her and forcing her into the backseat of his car. What followed was a harrowing 450-mile journey to his home in Klamath Falls, during which Zuberi repeatedly sexually assaulted the helpless victim.

Upon reaching his residence, Zuberi imprisoned the woman in a makeshift cinderblock cell that he had constructed in his garage. Trapped and subjected to unimaginable horrors, the victim exhibited incredible strength and resilience. She tirelessly fought back, using her bare hands to beat down the doors and walls of her prison until they were stained with her own blood. Eventually, her determination paid off, and she managed to break free, flagging down a passing motorist who immediately alerted the authorities.

In a desperate attempt to evade capture, Zuberi fled the area following the victim's escape. However, law enforcement agencies were relentless in their pursuit, tracking him down to Reno, Nevada, just a day later. The arrest was not without incident, as Zuberi engaged in a 45-minute standoff with the police. During this confrontation, he tried to destroy his phone and harm himself, as stated in the arresting documents.

Authorities have expressed deep concern that there may be more victims, as Zuberi is now believed to be a suspect in four other sexual assault cases across different states. The FBI revealed that since 2016, Zuberi has lived in various states, including New York, New Jersey, Oregon, Washington, California, Colorado, Utah, Florida, Nevada, and Alabama. He has used multiple aliases, such as Sakima, Justin Hyche, and Justin Kouassi, and is suspected of raping victims by posing as a police officer or drugging their drinks.

Facing charges of interstate kidnapping, Zuberi could potentially spend the rest of his life behind bars if convicted. The FBI is urging anyone with information or who believes they may have been victimized by Zuberi to come forward and cooperate with their investigation.

The horrifying nature of this case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that sex workers face on a daily basis, highlighting the urgent need for ongoing efforts to protect and support them. Law enforcement agencies are committed to uncovering any additional victims and ensuring that justice is served. The strength and resourcefulness demonstrated by the victim in this case may have spared other women from enduring a similar nightmare.

As the investigation continues, authorities remain steadfast in their mission to bring solace to the victims and their families, while sending a powerful message that such heinous acts will not be tolerated in our society.
