Harvard statistician reveals best strategies for winning $1.35 billion Mega Millions jackpot

14:12 07.08.2023

The Mega Millions lottery prize has reached an unprecedented amount, surpassing a staggering $1 billion. As the anticipation grows, many Americans are wondering if there are any strategies that can increase their chances of winning. While luck ultimately plays a significant role, there are some approaches that can improve one's odds.

According to Mark Glickman, a senior lecturer of statistics at Harvard University, the key is to buy as many tickets as reasonably possible. Glickman asserts that increasing the number of entries is the only way to enhance the probability of winning. However, the odds of hitting the Mega Millions jackpot are incredibly slim, making it crucial to focus on selecting random numbers. Glickman advises against choosing numbers with personal significance, such as birthdays, as they are likely to be popular choices among other participants.

The most recent Mega Millions drawing, which took place on Friday, had an estimated jackpot of $1.35 billion. The winning numbers were revealed as 11, 30, 45, 52, and 56, with a Mega Ball of 20. As of yet, there has been no confirmation of any winning tickets being sold. This significant jackpot, the second-largest in Mega Millions history, also ranks as the fourth-largest in U.S. lottery history.

Since the last Mega Millions jackpot winner on April 18, the jackpot has increased by approximately $25 million. This continuous growth in prize money can be attributed to deliberate changes made by the Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL), the organization behind Mega Millions. In an effort to transform the game into a national phenomenon, the MUSL has made winning the jackpot more challenging and increased the ticket price from $1 to $2. These modifications have resulted in more significant payouts and a higher number of participants. In fact, Americans are 15 times more likely to purchase tickets when the jackpot exceeds $1 billion compared to when it is a more modest $20 million.

The next Mega Millions drawing is scheduled for Tuesday at 11 p.m. Eastern time. If a lucky individual secures the winning numbers, they will have the option to receive the prize in either a series of annuity payments spread across 30 years or a one-time cash payment of approximately $757.2 million.

While the odds of winning the Mega Millions jackpot are approximately one in 302.58 million, the allure of the massive payouts has captivated the nation. Over the years, there have been five Mega Millions jackpots exceeding $1 billion. The largest jackpot in the game's history was a remarkable $1.5 billion, claimed by a South Carolina resident in October 2018. More recently, a $1.348 billion jackpot was won in Maine in January.

The region of Los Angeles has experienced a streak of lottery luck, with several significant wins in recent months. In February, Altadena, a city in Los Angeles County, produced the $2.04 billion Powerball jackpot winner, the largest in U.S. lottery history. Last month, downtown Los Angeles celebrated as the $1.08 billion Powerball jackpot winner was sold in the area, marking the sixth-largest prize in U.S. lottery history. However, the identity of the lucky winner remains unknown.

Mega Millions tickets, priced at $2 each, are available for purchase in 45 states, along with Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The proceeds from ticket sales remain in the state where the purchase occurred, contributing to designated causes and supporting retailer commissions. The drawings for Mega Millions take place on Tuesdays and Fridays at 11 p.m. Eastern time.

As the Mega Millions jackpot continues to soar, reaching an estimated $1.55 billion, it is now the largest in the game's history. No winning tickets were sold in the most recent drawing, which took place on Friday. The winning numbers were 11, 30, 45, 52, and 56, with a Mega Ball of 20. The absence of a jackpot winner since April 18 has fueled the excitement for the next drawing on Tuesday night.

If the estimated jackpot amount holds, it would also become the third-largest overall jackpot in U.S. lottery history. A single winning ticket for the upcoming drawing would have the choice of receiving a lump sum payment of $757.2 million before taxes or opting for the annuity option, which includes an immediate payment followed by 29 annual installments.

The chances of winning the Mega Millions jackpot currently stand at approximately one in 302.58 million. Despite the slim odds, since the last jackpot winner, there have been at least 62 tickets sold that matched all five white balls, earning their owners at least $1 million each.

With the previous record Mega Millions jackpot standing at $1.537 billion, set in October 2018 and won by a single ticket holder in South Carolina, the anticipation for the current jackpot has reached unprecedented levels. The Los Angeles area has experienced a series of lottery victories recently, with Altadena producing the winner of the largest Powerball jackpot in U.S. history, totaling $2.04 billion, in February. Additionally, downtown Los Angeles sold the winning ticket for a $1.08 billion Powerball jackpot last month.

Mega Millions tickets are available for purchase in all states except Alabama, Utah, Alaska, Hawaii, and Nevada, as well as in Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The game allocates half of the proceeds from each ticket sold to the state in which the sale occurred, supporting designated causes and retailer commissions. The Tuesday and Friday drawings take place at 11 p.m. Eastern time.
