Deadly storms leave 2 dead, hundreds of thousands without power in eastern US

14:42 08.08.2023

Intense storms wreaked havoc across the eastern United States on Monday, resulting in the deaths of at least two people and leaving over 1.1 million homes and businesses without power. The National Weather Service issued tornado watches and warnings for ten states, including Tennessee, New York, and the greater DC area. More than 29.5 million people were under tornado watch, with a significant threat of hurricane-force winds, large hail, and strong tornadoes.

Tragedy struck in Anderson, South Carolina, where a 15-year-old boy was killed when a tree fell on him as he exited a car at his grandparent's house amidst the storm. In Florence, Alabama, a 28-year-old man lost his life after being struck by lightning in a parking lot. These incidents serve as a grim reminder of the dangers posed by severe weather.

The impact of the storms extended beyond loss of life, as thousands of flights were canceled or delayed, causing chaos for travelers. By Monday night, over 2,600 US flights had been canceled, and nearly 7,900 were delayed, primarily affecting Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

The severity of the storms prompted the National Weather Service to issue warnings and advisories, urging people to stay weather aware and have multiple ways to receive alerts. The storms unleashed strong winds, heavy rain, and hail across a wide area, with hail as large as 4.5 inches in diameter reported in Virginia.

The storm system, described as "complicated and active," swept through the eastern United States, causing widespread thunderstorms and leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. Power lines were downed, trees crashed into homes, and roofs were torn off buildings. The region experienced a range of severe weather phenomena, including confirmed tornadoes. In the village of McGraw, New York, a tornado struck, prompting concerns about damage to mobile homes. The extent of the destruction was still being assessed.

Areas along the Mason-Dixon line and the southern Appalachians were among the hardest hit. Trained spotters reported high winds and resulting damage, with fallen trees being a common occurrence. The storm system's path stretched from Georgia to New York, affecting a vast area.

As the severe weather subsided into the evening, the threat of flooding remained for some areas due to continuous rainfall. The National Weather Service urged residents to remain cautious and stay informed about potential hazards.

The aftermath of these intense storms serves as a reminder of the unpredictable and destructive power of nature. It is essential for individuals to heed weather warnings, take necessary precautions, and stay informed to ensure their safety during severe weather events.
