Microsoft Introduces AI Button on Windows Keyboards, Marking First Major Change in Three Decades

Microsoft has announced a significant change to its Windows keyboards, adding an artificial intelligence (AI) button called the Copilot key. In a statement, Microsoft's executive vice president Yusuf Mehdi explained that the button will serve as the entry point into the world of AI on the PC. The addition of the Copilot key aims to empower users to easily participate in the AI transformation.

The Copilot key is integrated with Microsoft 365 and works alongside popular software such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams. Currently, users can access it using the keyboard shortcut Windows + C. However, the new key will further integrate AI technology into Windows, from the system to the hardware, simplifying and amplifying the computing experience.

Starting this month, some new PCs running Windows 11 will come equipped with the Copilot keyboard button. Microsoft has not disclosed which computer manufacturers will include the button, but they have stated that it will be available on "many of the new Windows 11 PCs from our ecosystem partners." Dell Technologies has already confirmed that the Copilot key will be present on its newest XPS laptops.

The Copilot key will be located near the space bar and will feature the Copilot logo. On some computers, it will replace the right CTRL key, while on others, it will replace a menu key. Microsoft compared the significance of the Copilot key to the introduction of the Windows key nearly 30 years ago.

This move by Microsoft is part of its broader strategy to capitalize on its partnership with OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, and position itself as a gateway for generative AI applications. However, the introduction of AI buttons to keyboards also raises ethical and legal concerns. The New York Times recently filed a lawsuit against both OpenAI and Microsoft, alleging copyright infringement related to tools like Copilot and ChatGPT.

While other companies, such as Apple and Google, have also introduced customized keys on their keyboards, Microsoft's dominance in the PC market gives it a significant advantage. According to market research firm IDC, approximately 82% of all desktop computers, laptops, and workstations run Windows.

The introduction of the Copilot key marks Microsoft's first major keyboard redesign in three decades, solidifying its commitment to AI integration. With the upcoming CES gadget show in Las Vegas, it is expected that more computer manufacturers will unveil their new models featuring the Copilot button, further expanding the reach of AI technology in the PC market.
