Joe Manchin Considers Leaving Democratic Party

15:55 10.08.2023

West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin, a prominent Democrat known for his maverick approach, has revealed that he is seriously considering leaving the party. Manchin, who has clashed with his party over legislation related to the climate crisis and voting rights, spoke candidly about his concerns regarding the Democratic brand. In an interview with West Virginia Metro News show Talkline with Hoppy Kercheval, Manchin expressed his desire for peace of mind and discussed the possibility of running as an independent for Congress or even as a third-party candidate for president.

During the interview, Manchin emphasized that he is not a typical Washington Democrat and has been contemplating leaving the party for some time. His independent streak has often put him at odds with top Senate Democrat Chuck Schumer, especially since the Democrats secured a narrow majority in 2020. With a 51-49 majority, including three independents who caucus with them, Manchin and his colleague Senator Kyrsten Sinema have been thorns in Schumer's side.

Manchin's potential departure from the Democratic Party gained further attention when he appeared with the No Labels group in New Hampshire last month. During the event, he discussed the idea of launching a third-party presidential campaign in 2024, which he believes would pose a threat to the two major political parties. He stated that the brand of the Democrats and Republicans had become unfavorable, and a third-party candidate could help bring the traditional parties back to what they should be.

Manchin's influence in the Senate has been notable, as he has used his position to push back against certain policies he opposes and ensure the passage of bills he supports. His reputation as a conservative Democrat has helped him maintain popularity in West Virginia, a Republican-leaning state that former President Donald Trump won by a large margin in 2020. However, his potential decision to spurn his party and run as an independent or third-party candidate could pose challenges in terms of fundraising and support.

The West Virginia senator is set to face a tough re-election bid next year, and the state's former Democratic-turned-Republican governor, Jim Justice, has already begun campaigning for the Republican nomination to challenge Manchin. As Manchin contemplates his next move, he has kept his options open regarding his party affiliation and electoral plans.

If Manchin were to leave the Democratic Party, he would follow in the footsteps of Senator Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona, who also became an independent at the end of last year. Sinema, like Manchin, faces a difficult re-election campaign next year, with the possibility of running in a three-way race against a Democrat and a Republican.

While the prospect of a successful third-party candidacy remains uncertain, Manchin sees it as an opportunity to make a significant impact and bring the traditional parties back to the center. His potential departure from the Democratic Party would undoubtedly have significant implications for the political landscape, particularly in a highly polarized climate. As Manchin ponders his future, the nation watches with anticipation to see how this influential senator's decision will shape the upcoming elections and the trajectory of American politics.
