A 3-year-old migrant girl died while on a bus carrying asylum seekers from Texas to Chicago, according to officials. The girl, who was traveling with her parents, died at a hospital in Marion County, Southern Illinois. The bus had originated from the Texas border town of Brownsville. The Texas Division of Emergency Management confirmed that the bus pulled over when the girl presented with health concerns, and security personnel on board called 911 for emergency attention. Paramedics treated the girl before she was taken to the hospital, where she later died. The cause of death has not been provided. The Illinois Department of Public Health is working with local health officials, state police, and federal authorities to investigate the situation. The bus was part of Texas Governor Greg Abbott's "border bus mission," which aims to transport migrants from Texas to Democratic-run cities in other states. Other Republican governors, including Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, have also sent buses to Democratic-run cities. Representative Joaquin Castro, who was briefed on the death, stated that the child had shown symptoms of an illness, including a fever and diarrhea, before losing consciousness. Since the program began in April 2022, Texas has transported over 30,000 migrants out of the state, including more than 4,600 to Chicago.
