Campbellsville University student found dead in dorm room

15:10 25.02.2024

A tragic incident unfolded at Campbellsville University in Kentucky, as 18-year-old student Josiah Malachi Kilman was found unresponsive in his dorm room early Saturday morning. Despite efforts to save him, Kilman was pronounced dead at a local hospital. The cause of his death remains unknown at this time.

However, a breakthrough in the case came later that day when 21-year-old Charles E. Escalera was arrested by Kentucky State Police in connection with Kilman's death. Escalera, also a student at Campbellsville University, was apprehended without incident in a barn on the Green County and Taylor County line following a manhunt. He is now facing murder charges and will be held in the Taylor County Detention Center.

The campus was placed on lockdown during the search for Escalera, but the university issued an all-clear once he was in custody. University President Joseph Hopkins expressed the community's grief over the loss of Kilman, emphasizing the importance of ensuring the safety and well-being of students and residents.

The motive behind the killing and the relationship between the suspect and the victim remain unclear. Campbellsville police have not provided further details on the circumstances leading up to the tragic event. The university has offered counseling services and support for those affected by the incident.

This incident comes just days after a similar tragedy at the University of Georgia, underscoring the importance of campus safety and security measures. Campbellsville University, a small private Christian college located about 85 miles south of Louisville, is now grappling with the aftermath of this devastating loss.
