David Weiss Appointed Special Counsel for Hunter Biden Investigation

17:30 12.08.2023

David C. Weiss, the U.S. attorney for Delaware, has recently found himself at the center of a complex and high-profile case involving Hunter Biden. Known for his tough and competitive nature, Weiss has built a reputation as a formidable force in both the courtroom and local softball leagues. Graduating from Cheltenham High School, Weiss joins the ranks of distinguished alumni, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, legendary baseball player Reggie Jackson, and conservative commentator Mark Levin.

Continuing his education at Washington University in St. Louis, Weiss later attended law school at Widener University in Wilmington, Delaware. Even before his appointment by President Donald J. Trump, Weiss had established himself as a dedicated public servant. He had previously worked as a prosecutor in the Delaware U.S. attorney's office, handling various cases. One notable investigation involved a businessman who pleaded guilty to campaign finance violations, specifically for illegally bundling contributions for President Biden's unsuccessful 2008 presidential campaign.

Despite his unassuming appearance, with graying hair and spectacles, Weiss has consistently drawn attention throughout his career. In fact, his colleagues celebrated his unanimous confirmation by the Senate with a memorable event, showcasing an old photo from the 1970s where Weiss sported long, center-parted hair, bearing a resemblance to singer Tony Orlando. Even Delaware's Democratic senators expressed their support when Weiss was nominated by President Trump in 2017. Senator Chris Coons praised Weiss, emphasizing his dedication to public service and his contributions to Delaware's law enforcement community. President Trump himself noted that Weiss shared his vision for "Making America Safe Again."

However, it is not the Hunter Biden case that Weiss believes will define his legacy. In the late 1990s, while working in private practice, he played a crucial role in investigating the disappearance of Anne Marie Fahey, a secretary for Delaware's governor. At the request of the Fahey family, Weiss urged his colleagues in the U.S. attorney's office to assist in the local investigation. Their efforts eventually led to the conviction of Thomas Capano, a former boyfriend of Fahey's and a well-connected former Delaware deputy attorney general. Capano was found guilty of murdering Fahey after their relationship ended and disposing of her body in the ocean. This case holds significant importance for Weiss, as he guided the Fahey family through the challenging process, showcasing his expertise as a seasoned trial lawyer.

Despite his past accomplishments, Weiss now finds himself thrust into the national spotlight due to his involvement in the Hunter Biden case. Although appointed by President Trump, he was retained by the Biden administration to ensure the Justice Department remained free from accusations of political interference. The case has the potential to shape Weiss's career, but those who know him believe that his work on the Fahey case will leave a more lasting impact on his legacy.
