Rising Anger as Maui Wildfires Claim Over 90 Lives

05:45 14.08.2023

To support those affected by the wildfire. The death toll in Hawaii continued to rise as recovery crews and cadaver dogs worked tirelessly to search through the devastation left behind by the deadliest U.S. wildfire in over a century. As of Sunday night, at least 96 people were confirmed dead, with officials warning that the number was likely to increase as the search continued.

The inferno, which struck the historic coastal town of Lahaina on the island of Maui in the early hours of Wednesday morning, almost completely destroyed the town, catching survivors off guard. Many of them claimed that there had been no warnings or alerts prior to the fire's rapid spread. Questions were raised as to why none of the island's sirens had been activated, prompting criticism of government inaction and lack of preparedness.

Senator Mazie Hirono, responding to the criticism, stated that she would wait for the results of an investigation initiated by the state's attorney general. Acknowledging the tragedy, Hirono emphasized the priority of rescue efforts and the urgent need to locate more bodies. Representative Jill Tokuda, whose district includes Maui, appeared on CBS News' "Face the Nation" and suggested that the warning sirens "likely did not go off" as the fire approached. She explained that the warning signals, usually sent to mobile phones, could have been affected by the mass power outages reported during the wildfires, preventing people from receiving vital information and guidance.

The scale of the destruction in Lahaina was devastating. Governor Josh Green reported that approximately 2,700 structures had been destroyed, resulting in an estimated loss of $5.6 billion. Thousands were left homeless, adding to the already tragic aftermath of the wildfire. Maui Police Chief John Pelletier described the intensity of the fire, stating that it had melted metal, making identification of remains difficult. He appealed to those with missing relatives to provide DNA samples in hopes of expediting the identification process. With a vast area still to be searched, Pelletier highlighted that the cadaver dogs had only covered three percent of the affected areas so far.

Amidst the tragedy, Clint Hansen, who provided an aerial view of the devastation from Flemming Rd. to Lahaina Gateway and Lahaina Cannery Mall, expressed gratitude to Maui Brewing Co for their assistance in supporting those affected by the wildfire. The community rallied together in the face of adversity, offering support and aid to those in need during this trying time.
