16:34 15.08.2023

In a recent development in the ongoing federal terrorism investigation, authorities in Philadelphia have apprehended a 17-year-old resident on state charges. The arrest was conducted by the FBI on Friday, although the identity of the suspect has not been disclosed.

The Philadelphia District Attorney's Office has revealed that the teenager is facing a range of charges, including weapons of mass destruction, criminal conspiracy, arson, causing/risking catastrophe, attempt to commit criminal mischief, possession of an instrument of crime, and recklessly endangering another person. District Attorney Larry Krasner has expressed his intention to try the suspect as an adult, and the US Attorney is currently reviewing the case for potential federal charges.

FBI Special Agent Jacqueline Maguire has disclosed that the suspect had been in communication with Katibat al Tawhid wal Jihad (KTJ), a designated global terrorism group affiliated with Al Qaeda. It has been revealed that the 17-year-old was exchanging and receiving media containing terrorism propaganda and instructions on how to carry out criminal acts, including bomb-making. Furthermore, Customs and Border Protection records indicate that the suspect's address received 14 international shipments of military and tactical gear. Notably, the suspect had also acquired a substantial number of firearms, in addition to materials such as wiring, chemicals, and potential remote detonators. Some of these purchases were made within the past few weeks.

Although the suspect had conducted general research on potential targets, no specific locations were mentioned. The FBI, with the assistance of SWAT officers, apprehended the suspect at their residence in the Wynnefield section of Philadelphia. District Attorney Krasner emphasized the significant threat the suspect posed to their vicinity, as well as the potential danger to people across the country and even overseas.

While the FBI assessed the situation as a risk to public safety, FBI Special Agent Maguire assured the public that there is currently no threat. Collaborating with the District Attorney's Office, the FBI obtained arrest and search warrants to carry out the operation, ensuring a swift and incident-free arrest. The investigation is ongoing, and it is possible that the suspect may face additional charges from the federal government.

Given the gravity of the charges, the District Attorney's Office is actively seeking to have the suspect tried as an adult. Authorities continue to delve into the case, working diligently to uncover any potential threats or accomplices associated with the suspect.
