Michael Oher reveals 'Blind Side' adoption and financial hardships

07:43 16.08.2023

Former NFL tackle Michael Oher, whose life story inspired the hit movie "The Blind Side," has taken legal action against the family who took him in, the Tuohys, alleging that they tricked him into signing conservatorship papers instead of adoption papers almost twenty years ago. Oher, now 37 years old and a married father of four, is seeking to terminate the conservatorship and receive a full accounting of the money earned from his name and story, which became a cultural phenomenon and grossed over $300 million at the box office.

Despite the success of "The Blind Side," Oher has distanced himself from the film, claiming that it had a negative impact on his NFL career. However, in a 2015 interview, he acknowledged the positive impact it had on people and how it inspired others. Nevertheless, Oher's focus now lies in seeking justice for himself and unraveling the complex web surrounding his legal status and alleged financial exploitation.

During his NFL career, which spanned eight seasons as an offensive tackle for the Baltimore Ravens, Tennessee Titans, and Carolina Panthers, Oher achieved great success. His time with the Ravens culminated in a Super Bowl victory in 2013. However, his recent lawsuit alleges that the Tuohys received a contract price of $225,000 and 2.5% of the film's net proceeds through their deal with 20th Century Fox, while Oher himself received no payment.

The court filing reveals that Oher believed he was being legally adopted by the Tuohys but was instead placed in a conservatorship, granting them control over his contracts and decision-making powers. The adoption paperwork was purposely titled as a conservatorship because Oher had turned 18, unknowingly leaving him vulnerable to the implications of signing the documents. It was only in February of this year when Oher discovered the true nature of the papers, leaving him feeling shocked and betrayed.

The Tuohys, who have yet to respond to the lawsuit, played a significant role in Oher's life by providing him with a stable home and opportunities that propelled him towards success. However, the question now arises as to whether their intentions were driven by genuine care for Oher's well-being or a desire for financial gain.

As the legal battle unfolds, Oher aims to terminate the conservatorship and regain control over his own affairs. At the same time, he is seeking a full accounting of the money earned from his name and story, believing it is rightfully his. The outcome of this case could potentially have far-reaching implications, not only for Oher but for others in similar vulnerable situations who may be susceptible to exploitation.

Amidst his legal challenges, Oher remains dedicated to his family and his role as a father. He continues to cherish the love and support he receives from his college sweetheart turned wife, with whom he has built a life and a future. Oher's fight for justice serves as a poignant reminder of the complexities and potential consequences associated with fame and the exploitation that can sometimes accompany it. What was once an inspiring story of triumph now sheds light on the darker side of success and emphasizes the importance of safeguarding one's own interests, even when surrounded by those who may claim to have their best intentions at heart.
