09:56 16.08.2023

U.S. President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden are set to embark on a trip to Hawaii on Monday, where they will assess the extensive damage caused by the devastating wildfires that swept through the resort town of Lahaina. The White House confirmed their plans, stating that during their visit, President Biden will meet with first responders, survivors, as well as federal, state, and local officials.

The President's decision to visit Maui comes as the island grapples with the aftermath of the wildfires that engulfed entire communities and tragically claimed numerous lives. With the destructive blaze leaving at least 106 people confirmed dead and hundreds more missing, the situation remains dire for the affected residents.

"The president continues to marshal a whole-of-government response to the deadly Maui fires, and he has committed to delivering everything that the people of Hawaii need from the federal government as they recover from this disaster," said White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre in a statement.

President Biden, who has been in constant communication with Hawaii Governor Josh Green, expressed his determination to provide unwavering support to the state. "Every asset they need will be there for them," Mr. Biden assured, emphasizing the federal government's commitment to aid in the recovery efforts. "And we'll be there in Maui as long as it takes."

The visit to Hawaii comes prior to President Biden's scheduled vacation at Lake Tahoe later this week. The president's dedication to addressing the aftermath of the wildfires signifies his administration's prioritization of providing immediate assistance and support to the affected communities.

White House spokesperson Olivia Dalton further confirmed that discussions are currently underway within the administration regarding President Biden's visit to Hawaii. Addressing reporters while traveling with the president to Wisconsin, Dalton revealed that Biden intends to discuss the situation in Maui during his remarks in Milwaukee later that day.

As the devastating wildfires in Maui have profoundly impacted the lives of countless individuals, President Biden's visit serves as a symbol of solidarity and reassurance, assuring the people of Hawaii that they will not be left to face the aftermath alone. With the president's commitment to a comprehensive recovery plan, the affected communities can look forward to receiving the necessary resources and aid to rebuild and heal from this catastrophic event.

Nancy Cordes, CBS News' chief White House correspondent, will continue to provide updates on the president's visit and the recovery efforts in Maui.
