Struggling Mom of 4 Slams AOC's Oblivious Take on Inflation

03:52 02.09.2023

Inflation Concerns Continue to Plague American Families as Lawmakers Dismiss the Issue

Amber Bergeron, a mother of four from Louisiana, is among the many Americans struggling to make ends meet amidst soaring inflation rates. She recently directed her frustration towards Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), accusing lawmakers of being oblivious to the impact of high inflation on families across the country. Bergeron specifically criticized Ocasio-Cortez for sharing a video claiming that inflation is merely "propaganda."

During an appearance on "Fox & Friends First," Bergeron questioned how Ocasio-Cortez could dismiss inflation as propaganda when the rising costs are evident in everyday expenses such as electric bills and groceries. She further challenged Ocasio-Cortez to check her Walmart app to see the stark difference in prices compared to last year. Bergeron expressed her bewilderment at how lawmakers could remain unaware of the struggles faced by ordinary citizens.

Ocasio-Cortez had shared a video on her Instagram story from New Zealand's left-wing Aotearoa Liberation League, where a woman claimed that the propaganda surrounding inflation aimed to protect "greedy shareholders" responsible for global rising costs. Meanwhile, the White House has been touting its Bidenomics plan as a solution to combat soaring prices. However, Bergeron stated that she has seen little change in her day-to-day expenses, including electric bills, medical costs, and insurance premiums, which have all noticeably increased.

Bergeron's family, like many others, is struggling to save for emergencies. Recently, their truck broke down, and they were unable to rely on their reserves or take out a loan due to the high interest rates. In response, Bergeron's husband has been working additional hours, sacrificing time with his family to make up for their savings shortfall. However, despite their efforts, the situation is looking bleak.

Bergeron's experience reflects a broader trend. Recent data indicates that 61% of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck, demonstrating the persistent reality of inflation's impact. In July, a survey revealed an alarming 59% increase in the number of Americans struggling to make ends meet compared to the same month last year. The rising costs were observed across various categories, including food, prescriptions, and entertainment.

President Biden, on the other hand, chose to emphasize the positive, boasting about the creation of approximately 187,000 new jobs in August. However, he avoided addressing the data indicating the financial struggles faced by the majority of Americans.

The Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) index, a crucial measure of inflation closely monitored by the Federal Reserve, increased by 0.2% from the previous month, demonstrating the challenges of curbing high inflation. This data aligns with the concerns raised by Bergeron and others regarding the rising costs of living.

As the cost of living continues to rise, many Americans find themselves trapped in a cycle of financial instability. Bergeron's story, along with the broader data, serves as a reminder that the impact of inflation cannot be dismissed as propaganda. Families across the country are grappling with the consequences of skyrocketing prices, and it is essential for lawmakers to acknowledge and address these concerns.
