1 dead, 5 injured in shooting at New York City subway station

20:22 12.02.2024

In a tragic incident that unfolded during the evening rush hour, one person was killed and five others were injured in a shooting at a New York City subway station in the Bronx. The victim who lost his life was identified as a man in his 30s, while a fire department spokesperson described four of the five injuries as serious.

Eyewitnesses recounted the horrifying moments leading up to the shooting. Efrain Feliciano, a witness at the scene, shared his account with the Daily News, stating, "The train was coming and there were two kids yelling. There were at least six shots." Mr. Feliciano also described seeing sparks as the bullets struck the wall, and a woman in distress holding a child, screaming in fear.

Television news helicopters captured footage showing a subway train halted at the station, with orange evidence cones scattered across the elevated platform. As the investigation unfolded, law enforcement officials revealed that no one had been taken into custody, prompting a citywide manhunt for the suspect.

The incident has reignited concerns about safety on the New York City subway system. In recent years, there have been several high-profile incidents that have left commuters feeling uneasy. However, crime rates in the city have been steadily declining since the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Last year, the number of shootings in New York City dropped by 39% compared to the previous year, and subway-related killings decreased from 10 to five.

As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting at the Bronx station, and the severity of the injuries sustained by the five victims remains unclear. Local media, citing unnamed police sources, reported that the injuries were not life-threatening.

The shooting took place at approximately 4:38 p.m., and the shooter remains at large. The subway station where the incident occurred is situated at the intersection of Mount Eden and Jerome Avenues in the Bronx. Disturbing footage from NBC New York captured a first responder rushing from the scene, carrying an injured teenage girl, highlighting the chaotic and traumatic nature of the incident.

Authorities are urging anyone with information about the shooting or the whereabouts of the suspect to come forward and assist in their ongoing investigation. The incident serves as a grim reminder of the need for continued efforts to ensure the safety and security of New York City's subway system.
