Biden's Busy Schedule Delays Visit to East Palestine

President Biden Faces Criticism for Not Visiting East Palestine Months After Train Derailment

During a press conference in Live Oak, Florida on Saturday, President Joe Biden faced questions regarding his failure to visit the small Ohio town of East Palestine, which was devastated by a train derailment seven months ago. The incident, which occurred on February 3, resulted in the release of toxic chemicals and contamination of the local water supply. Despite recently embarking on a family vacation in Nevada and making multiple trips to Delaware in the past month alone, President Biden claimed that he hadn't had the occasion to visit the affected town.

When asked about his absence from East Palestine, President Biden explained, "There's a lot going on here, and I just haven't been able to break." He further revealed that his upcoming international travel plans would delay any potential visit to the town. "I'm going from Washington to India to Vietnam, so it's gonna be awhile," he added. The president, however, assured that the necessary resources would be provided to East Palestine to address the aftermath of the derailment.

Criticism of President Biden's delayed visit to East Palestine began shortly after the incident, with Ohio Republicans and US Sen. J.D. Vance accusing him of neglecting the town's plight. Senator Vance emphasized that cleanup efforts were still ongoing, with large quantities of soil contaminated by chemicals. "One hundred and sixty-six days ago, Joe Biden promised he would visit East Palestine. He has failed to keep that promise," Senator Vance said in a statement. "Not only has Joe Biden refused to visit East Palestine, but he has also refused to grant critical assistance to the recovery effort."

The president's failure to prioritize a visit to East Palestine has only been amplified by his recent travel activities. Prior to the press conference, it was reported that President Biden spent roughly 40% of his presidency on personal overnight trips away from the White House, a higher percentage than any previous president. The White House has yet to respond to these claims.

The train derailment in East Palestine left residents suffering from nausea, dizziness, and headaches in the days following the incident. While officials assured the public that the air and water were safe, concerns about the long-term effects on health and the environment persist. Despite President Biden's promise on March 2 to visit East Palestine "at some point," the town continues to await his arrival and the much-needed support that his visit would symbolize.

As the residents of East Palestine continue to grapple with the aftermath of the train derailment, questions linger about President Biden's priorities and his commitment to the communities affected by such disasters. The lack of a visit to East Palestine has fueled criticism and calls for greater assistance from the federal government.
