Sum 41 Frontman Deryck Whibley Recovers from Pneumonia, Discharged from Hospital

04:14 17.09.2023

Sum 41 frontman Deryck Whibley was released from the hospital on Saturday after being treated for pneumonia and facing the possibility of heart failure. His wife, Ariana Whibley, shared the update on Instagram, expressing her happiness at his positive response to treatment. She also revealed that he is now under the care of his mother, who is a registered nurse, and herself. The post featured a bouquet of flowers on a shelf, along with photos of the couple and their two children.

The hospitalization came suddenly on Thursday night, shortly after the band's tour had wrapped up. Ariana Whibley shared a series of photos documenting the ordeal, including one of Deryck being loaded into an ambulance and another of her holding his hand as he wore a pulse oximeter. Medical staff were concerned about the strain on his vital organs, particularly his heart, which led to him being hospitalized for a few days to undergo treatment. However, Ariana Whibley provided reassurance that the pressure and strain on his heart and lungs had improved and he was now able to breathe with less pain.

In her Instagram post, Ariana expressed her gratitude for the support they had received from the community, describing the outpouring of love as overwhelming and saying it had helped them stay positive during this challenging time. The couple had intended to celebrate their 8-year wedding anniversary in Chicago before Deryck's hospitalization. They have two children together, a 3-year-old son named Lydon Idby and a six-month-old daughter named Quentin Arlo.

This is not the first health scare for Deryck Whibley. In 2014, he was diagnosed with liver and kidney failure after collapsing on his kitchen floor. He spent a week in a coma as doctors detoxed his body from alcohol. Following that experience, he made the decision to become sober, which he credits with improving his overall health and well-being. In 2021, he and Ariana opened up about their sobriety journeys, revealing that they had decided to take their lives seriously and support each other in their recovery.

Sum 41, the Canadian rock band that Deryck Whibley founded in 1996, announced in May that they were disbanding after 27 years. The band, which also includes Dave Baksh, Jason McCaslin, Tom Thacker, and Frank Zummo, expressed their gratitude to their fans for their support throughout the years. They recently completed their "Let the Bad Times Roll" tour, which included performances alongside The Offspring and Simple Plan.
