Infant's Terrifying Encounter with Rats Reveals Disturbing Prior Boast by Father

04:50 23.09.2023

In a shocking case of child neglect, an Indiana father, David Schonabaum, and his wife, Angel Schonabaum, have been charged after their 6-month-old baby boy was found with more than 50 rat bites all over his body. The distressing incident took place at their home in Evansville, which was reportedly owned by a cousin. The couple's infant son was discovered covered in blood, with bite marks on his forehead, cheek, nose, thigh, foot, arm, fingers, and toes. His right arm had been gnawed down to the bone, and parts of his fingers were missing.

Authorities were alerted to the horrific situation when the baby's parents awoke to find their child in this critical condition. The child's aunt, Delania Thurman, who also resided in the same house, has also been arrested and charged with child neglect. The family's home on South Linwood Avenue was described as cluttered, filled with trash, and covered in rat feces.

Upon arriving at the scene, police were met with a stomach-turning sight as they discovered the severely neglected infant. Sgt. Anna Gray, a spokesperson for the Evansville Police, referred to it as one of the worst cases of child neglect she had encountered throughout her career. She expressed the difficulty of maintaining composure and remaining professional when confronted with such distressing scenes.

The baby was immediately flown to an Indianapolis hospital, where doctors administered a blood transfusion due to his drastically lowered body temperature of 93.5 degrees. The current condition of the infant has not been disclosed at this time. The family's home had been infested with rats since March, and exterminators from Terminix had been treating the property. However, despite their efforts, the baby became the unfortunate victim of the rodents.

Disturbingly, this was not the first time rats had attacked children in the home. Two children residing in the house had previously reported to their school teacher that mice had bitten their toes while they slept. This information was shared with an employee from the Indiana Department of Child Services (DCS) on September 1. During a visit to the home four days later, Delania Thurman dismissed the marks on her child's toes as mere scratches from the bed frame.

It was revealed that the DCS had been involved with the family since April, visiting the home twice a week due to past reports of child endangerment. These reports included an allegation last year that a child had been injured due to a lack of supervision and another claim in June that David Schonabaum had physically abused one of the children. DCS did not provide a comment regarding the neglect allegations.

Newly uncovered social media posts have shed light on the troubled family dynamic within the household. David Schonabaum's disturbing March 2021 post revealed his volatile temper, stating, "I avoid s-t because I'm afraid of me, not you. Temper go from zero to prison real fast." Although police documents confirm Schonabaum as a convicted felon, he never served time in prison. Instead, in 2021, he entered a plea agreement for possession of meth and was given a one-year suspended sentence, which he served under home detention while completing community service.

Videos shared online by Angel Schonabaum in recent months showcased the disheveled condition of the family home. In these videos, children were seen sitting on the floor amidst debris, electric cords, and garbage bags. Some videos appeared to be meant humorously, with a voice heard saying, "The thing next to you is a pain in the ass."

According to an Evansville police report, they had been called to the home in June after a relative threatened to "blow up their house over the phone." However, the identity of the alleged culprit remains unclear, and the police have not yet commented on this matter.

This tragic case of child neglect has shocked the community, and the investigation is ongoing. The Schonabaums and Thurman are currently facing charges of child neglect, and the local authorities are working diligently to ensure justice is served for the innocent baby boy who suffered such appalling abuse.
