Mom who gave daughters, 15 and 5, melatonin gummies before fatally shooting them gets 78 years

Veronica Youngblood, a 38-year-old Virginia mother, was sentenced to 78 years in prison on Friday for the fatal shooting of her two daughters, Sharon Castro, 15, and Brooklynn Youngblood, 5, five years ago. The gruesome act took place in their McLean apartment after Youngblood sedated her children with melatonin-laced gummies in August 2018. Brooklynn was shot in the head and died at the scene, while Sharon was struck in the chest and back and later succumbed to her injuries at the hospital. Sharon managed to make a harrowing call to 911, identifying her mother as the shooter, before losing her life.

Ron Youngblood, Veronica's ex-husband, revealed that the motive behind the killings was his ex-wife's desire to hurt him. He explained that Veronica saw their daughters as leverage to manipulate him and gain control over their lives. The couple had planned to move to Missouri together, but Veronica changed her mind at the last minute, insisting that she wanted to stay in Virginia with the girls. However, a judge ruled that Ron could take their biological daughter, Brooklynn, to Missouri with him. This decision left Veronica feeling powerless and led her to carry out the act of revenge against her daughters.

During the two-week trial, jurors were deeply traumatized by the evidence presented, particularly the distressing 911 call made by Sharon as she lay dying. The overwhelming emotional impact of the case was so severe that the jurors requested therapy to cope with the psychological aftermath.

Veronica Youngblood had purchased the firearm used in the murders just nine days prior to the tragic event. Despite the shocking crime, Ron Youngblood admitted that he never anticipated his ex-wife would harm their children. He believed that she might try to harm him but never imagined she would go as far as killing their daughters. Ron expressed his devastation and loss, emphasizing that his daughters were not just important to him, but they were his entire life.

Veronica Youngblood's defense team pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, asserting that she heard voices and suffered from a mental illness. However, this defense was ultimately rejected by the court. The jury heard testimony during the sentencing phase that shed light on Veronica's difficult upbringing, marked by poverty, physical and sexual abuse as a child, and her turn to sex work to support her older daughter.

Despite the circumstances, the judge presiding over the case, Randy Bellows, handed down the maximum sentence of 78 years, rejecting a request from the defense for concurrent sentences, which would have reduced the term to 42 years. Judge Bellows emphasized the gravity of a parent's responsibility to protect their children, stating, "Tragically, their mother became the instrument of their death."

Veronica Youngblood, who referred to herself as a "good mother" during her sentencing, attempted to explain her actions, claiming that something had exploded in her mind. She spoke for 30 minutes, sharing the hardships she faced while raising her daughters and expressing remorse for her actions.

As Veronica begins her lengthy prison sentence, Ron Youngblood remains devastated by the loss of his beloved daughters. He recognizes that nothing can bring them back, and their absence will forever weigh heavily on his heart.
