Jury to resume deliberations in Michigan school shooter's father's trial

20:28 18.03.2024

The historic trials of the parents of Michigan school shooter Ethan Crumbley have resulted in guilty verdicts, but the parents of the four students killed at Oxford High School in 2021 are not done seeking accountability. They are now turning their attention to the school district and school administrators, demanding lasting efforts from state leaders, including changes to governmental immunity laws that protect schools from being sued and requiring independent reviews after any mass shooting. The parents are calling for a continued investigation into the response at Oxford, with subpoena power to force people to cooperate, citing shortcomings in a third-party report released last year. The parents of the victims - Hana St. Juliana, Justin Shilling, Madisyn Baldwin, and Tate Myre - are pushing for wider changes, especially after the Oakland County Prosecutor's Office announced that no additional criminal charges would be brought against school officials.

The trials against the Crumbleys were already a landmark, as they were the first time parents were held responsible for their child's mass school shooting. Ethan Crumbley was sentenced to life in prison after pleading guilty to murder, terrorism, and other charges. During the trials, it was revealed that school staff members were aware of Ethan's deteriorating mental state but failed to act. The defense lawyers for James and Jennifer Crumbley also shifted blame onto school administrators, who were similarly made aware of Ethan's struggles.

In a separate case, a jury in Michigan is currently deliberating in the involuntary manslaughter trial of James Crumbley, the father of Ethan Crumbley. Prosecutors argue that James Crumbley was grossly negligent in failing to secure the gun used in the shooting and ignoring his son's mental health issues. The defense, however, contends that James Crumbley had no knowledge of his son's plans and should not be held responsible for the tragedy. The jury is set to continue deliberations on whether James Crumbley will be found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in the mass school shooting that took place in 2021 at Oxford High School.
