Face the Nation: Ocasio-Cortez and Gonzales Speak on Sept. 24, 2023

12:08 24.09.2023

In a recent interview on "Face the Nation," Republican Congressman Tony Gonzales of Texas expressed his opposition to a short-term deal to keep the government funded, stating that continuing resolutions only delay the problem. Gonzales called for the passing of House conservative appropriation bills and collaboration with the Senate to solve the issue. He criticized Speaker McCarthy and President Biden for treating the situation as a political problem, while the American public would suffer the most in the event of a shutdown. Gonzales emphasized the need for immediate action through appropriations bills and warned that the country is headed for a shutdown.

When asked about his confidence in Speaker McCarthy's leadership, Gonzales stated that he was focused on addressing the border crisis in his district and did not have time to speculate on political futures. He highlighted the impact of the crisis, comparing it to a category four hurricane hitting the region. Gonzales expressed concerns about Border Patrol agents not being able to perform their duties effectively due to being stationed in processing centers instead of the field. He attributed this to the failed immigration policies of the Biden administration.

Gonzales proposed several solutions to address the border crisis, including ending catch and release, supporting the Stone Garden program for manpower and equipment, and implementing repatriation flights for individuals who do not qualify for asylum. He criticized the granting of work permits to half a million Venezuelans, arguing that it undermines efforts to address immigration reform in Congress.

In another interview on "Face the Nation," Democratic Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez discussed the expanding auto workers strike. She emphasized the need for political and popular support to achieve a breakthrough in addressing the crisis of inequality in the economy. Ocasio-Cortez criticized the CEOs of the Big Three automakers for giving themselves significant wage and compensation increases while workers have experienced wage decreases. She highlighted the public support for autoworkers and stated that it is in the interest of the Big Three to reach a resolution quickly.

Ocasio-Cortez addressed the UAW president's statement that the endorsement of President Biden needs to be earned. She praised President Biden for his upcoming visit to the picket line, calling it a historic event. Ocasio-Cortez acknowledged the market shift towards electric vehicles and expressed her intention to buy a union-made electric vehicle in the future. However, she currently owns a non-union-made Tesla.

Overall, both interviews shed light on the ongoing concerns and debates surrounding government funding, the border crisis, and the auto workers strike. The politicians presented their perspectives on the issues and proposed various solutions to address them.
