Off-duty Texas trooper shoots neighbor in mistaken break-in incident

17:38 25.09.2023

In a shocking incident in Houston early Monday morning, an off-duty Texas Highway Patrol trooper shot a neighbor through a closed door, mistakenly thinking the man was an intruder. The incident took place on Crawford Street, just steps away from Minute Maid Park, the home of the World Series champion Houston Astros.

According to officials, the 35-year-old man who was shot in the right shoulder is expected to survive. The identity of the shooter has not been disclosed, but state officials confirmed that he is an off-duty Texas Highway Patrol trooper. The trooper believed that "someone was trying to break into his apartment" on the fifth floor and subsequently discharged his weapon.

Assistant Chief Yasar Bashir of the Houston Police Department provided some insight into the incident, stating, "We don't know why he was at that apartment, but the initial assessment is that the trooper believed he was trying to break in." It is worth noting that the man who was shot also lives in the same apartment building.

The trooper claimed to have given "several commands to him to get away" before resorting to opening fire on the man on the other side of the door, Bashir added. Thankfully, the trooper himself was not injured during the incident.

Both the Houston Police Department and the Texas Rangers are currently conducting investigations into the shooting. Authorities will be questioning both the trooper and the suspect to gather more information about what exactly transpired that led to this devastating incident.

Responding officers found the suspect, described as a Black man in his 30s, bleeding from his gunshot wound. The officers promptly applied two tourniquets in an effort to save his life before he was rushed to a nearby hospital. It is unclear at this time the extent of his injuries.

The trooper, who lives in the same building as the suspect, claimed that he suspected the man of attempting to break into his apartment unit. Houston Assistant Chief Yasar Bashir revealed that the trooper had instructed the suspect to stop and repeatedly commanded him to go away before ultimately shooting him through the closed door.

Fox News Digital has reached out to the Texas Department of Public Safety for comment on this distressing incident. As investigations continue, the community waits for answers, hoping for justice and an understanding of how such a grave mistake could have occurred.
