Hollywood Video Game Performers Ready to Strike Over Pay and Protections

07:37 26.09.2023

Voice actors and motion capture performers in the video game industry have voted overwhelmingly in favor of authorizing a strike if negotiations for a new labor contract fail. The actors, represented by the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA), are demanding higher pay to cope with the rising cost of living. Cissy Jones, a BAFTA-winning voice actor known for her work in the video game "Firewatch," expressed the need for a raise, stating that their rates have not increased in five years despite the soaring prices of essential goods and services.

The video game industry, which generated total revenues of $180.3 billion in 2021 and is expected to reach $218.8 billion by 2024, has seen a surge in unionization efforts. Along with pay, the performers represented by SAG-AFTRA are also concerned about the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to create voices in video games. They are urging companies such as Disney, Activision, EA, and Epic Games to consult performers on AI usage, as some companies have already started utilizing this technology. AI has also been a contentious issue for writers, as striking actors covered by TV, theatrical, and streaming contracts have voiced their concerns.

Another critical issue being negotiated is the need for more safety measures for motion capture performers, who play a significant role in game development by embodying characters and performing stunts. SAG-AFTRA is requesting a set medic at dangerous stunts, similar to film and television sets. They are also demanding that on-camera performers receive the same rest periods as off-camera performers.

Cissy Jones shared her experience with AI, revealing that 18 months ago, she discovered videos on TikTok that used an AI version of her voice without her consent. With her voice acting as her sole source of income, she panicked and realized the vulnerability of performers in the face of AI advancements.

After voting closed, SAG-AFTRA announced that 98.32% of those who cast their ballots had voted in favor of authorizing a strike. Contract talks between SAG-AFTRA and gaming companies, including Activision Blizzard, Electronic Arts, Epic Games, and Formosa Interactive, are scheduled to begin on Tuesday. The union is seeking higher wages for performers, protection for motion capture performers, and safeguards against AI usage. Despite reaching tentative agreements on over half of the proposals, the union remains committed to negotiating for a fair contract that acknowledges the contributions of SAG-AFTRA-represented performers in the video game industry.
