Teacher caught with meth at school event, students make shocking discovery

03:20 27.09.2023

A shocking incident unfolded at Helfrich Park STEM Academy in Indiana last week, when an eighth-grade teacher, Sarah Duncan, was arrested after two students stumbled upon her disturbing secret. During a "Family Fun Night" event on September 12, the 35-year-old teacher posed for a photo with the students in a photo booth. Little did she know that her seemingly innocent hair scrunchie would soon become the center of attention.

According to the probable cause affidavit obtained by Fox News Digital, after the photo was taken, the two students noticed something unusual about Duncan's hair accessory. As they were cleaning up the area, they discovered a blueish-colored velvet scrunchie with a white zipper on the table. Curiosity got the better of them, and they decided to open the zipper pouch. To their horror, they found a glass vial containing a white powder substance, which they suspected to be drugs, along with a cut straw.

Realizing the seriousness of the situation, the two students immediately reported their findings to another teacher, who instructed them to throw the scrunchie in the trash. The concerned teacher then secured the scrunchie in her classroom and promptly informed the school's principal and assistant principal.

While the event came to a close at around 6 p.m., two janitors working at the school noticed Duncan frantically searching for a hair tie. Little did they know that she was desperately trying to hide her involvement in the shocking discovery made by the students. Security camera footage reviewed by the police, taken during the event, showed Duncan wearing the scrunchie earlier in the evening.

The police wasted no time in conducting a field test for methamphetamine on the scrunchie, which came back positive. The revelation was deeply disturbing, raising concerns about the safety of the school's students and the trust placed in their educators.

Taking the investigation further, Helfrich Park STEM Academy's deputy chief of staff and the Evansville Police Chief, Tim Alford, accompanied Duncan to a nearby clinic for a drug test. Shockingly, her first two urine samples were deemed too small and did not reach the necessary temperature for testing. Duncan expressed confusion over the situation, claiming she had no idea why her urine failed to meet the testing requirements.

As she made a third attempt, officers observed an unauthorized collection container falling out of Duncan's shorts. In their affidavit, the police recorded Duncan's statement, in which she claimed to be unaware of the pouch's presence until after she provided her second sample. She further asserted that she did not know how or when the pouch got into her shorts and suggested that someone she knows may have put it there to help them pass drug screens.

The consequences of Duncan's actions were severe. She was promptly booked into Vanderburgh County Jail on one count of criminal possession and one count of possession of drug paraphernalia. However, she was released on a $1,000 bond, pending her first court hearing, which was scheduled to take place on Tuesday.

In addition to the legal ramifications, Duncan faced immediate professional repercussions. According to local outlet WFIE, she was fired from her position at the school on the same day as her arrest. The termination serves as a clear message that such behavior is not tolerated within the educational system.

Fox News Digital made efforts to reach out to the school district for comment but was unsuccessful at the time of reporting. Furthermore, Duncan could not be reached for comment, and it remains unclear who her attorney is. The incident has left many in shock and raised concerns about the safety and well-being of students entrusted to the care of their teachers. The community is now left to grapple with the aftermath of this troubling event, seeking reassurances that steps will be taken to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
