Woman sentenced to 8.5 years for fatally shoving NYC singing coach

In a tragic case that has shocked the city, 28-year-old former event planner Lauren Pazienza has been sentenced to eight-and-a-half years in prison for the unprovoked shoving of 87-year-old Broadway voice coach Barbara Maier Gustern, resulting in her death. The sentencing took place on Friday in Manhattan state Supreme Court, where Judge Felicia Mennin added an additional six months to Pazienza's agreed-upon sentence, stating that she did not believe Pazienza had fully taken responsibility for her actions.

The incident occurred on March 10, 2022, when Pazienza hurled profanities at Gustern and intentionally shoved her to the ground on a Chelsea sidewalk. Gustern, who had a renowned career as a vocal coach and had worked with celebrities such as Blondie singer Debbie Harry, suffered a "massive hemorrhage" on the left side of her brain as a result of the fall. She was rushed to the hospital but tragically passed away five days later.

Pazienza, who could have faced up to 25 years in prison if found guilty by a jury, had previously pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter as part of a plea deal. As per the deal, she admitted to shouting obscenities at Gustern before violently shoving her to the ground. The motive behind the attack remains unclear.

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg expressed his satisfaction with the plea deal, stating, "Today's plea holds Pazienza accountable for her deadly actions." The plea deal allowed for some closure for Gustern's family and loved ones, who have been grieving since her untimely passing.

The sentencing was met with mixed reactions, as some felt that the punishment was too lenient given the severity of the crime. However, Pazienza's defense attorney, Arthur Aidala, has not yet responded to requests for comment.

The tragic loss of Gustern has deeply affected those who knew her, including her former student and performer Kimilee Bryant, who referred to Gustern as her "New York mom." Bryant shared how Gustern and her late husband had taken her in when she first arrived in New York City to perform in "The Phantom of the Opera." The couple had become like family to her, providing support and companionship during holidays and shows.

The case has elicited a strong emotional response from the community, as a beloved figure in the world of Broadway has been senselessly taken away. The sentencing of Pazienza, though offering some solace to Gustern's loved ones, serves as a reminder of the tragedy that occurred on that fateful day.
