Illinois Gov. demands Biden address migrant 'crisis' immediately

00:35 04.10.2023

Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker has joined a growing number of Democrats criticizing the Biden administration's handling of the influx of migrants at the southern border. In a letter to President Biden, Pritzker described the situation in Illinois as "untenable," citing the arrival of over 15,000 migrants in the past 13 months and the increasing number of busloads of migrants being sent to Chicago each day. Pritzker expressed his frustration with the federal government's lack of intervention and coordination at the border, which has placed a significant burden on Illinois.

Pritzker's letter followed a tense call between the governor, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, and top White House officials Jeff Zients and Tom Perez. During the call, Pritzker and Johnson implored the officials for additional federal support to accommodate the migrants. While a White House official referred to the call as "productive," it is unlikely to alleviate the mounting concerns in Illinois and other Democratic-led states and cities, including New York, that have struggled to house the increasing number of migrants released from federal border custody.

The public disagreements between Democratic leaders and the White House highlight a broader challenge for President Biden on immigration and border issues. Republicans have accused Biden of implementing policies that encourage illegal crossings, and more Democrats have begun to criticize his border strategy, particularly those in states and cities receiving migrants. New York City, in particular, has faced operational challenges, with Mayor Eric Adams accusing Biden of abandoning the city on the issue. Governor Kathy Hochul, while more restrained in her criticism, also expressed concerns about the open border during a recent interview.

In his letter, Pritzker called on the Biden administration to waive fees for migrant work permit applications, expedite the processing of petitions, provide additional funding to the state, and coordinate the transportation of migrants across the country. A White House spokesperson mentioned that the administration has already approved $1 billion in funds for cities and communities sheltering migrants and taken steps to expedite work permits. They also stated that efforts are being made to increase deportations of migrants who cross into the U.S. illegally.

Pritzker's recommendations include appointing a point person in the White House to oversee border efforts, taking a more active role in transporting migrants out of border states, and providing financial support for temporary housing, food, and social services for migrants. He urged President Biden to take swift action to address the situation and provide assistance to affected states and their residents, as well as the asylum seekers themselves.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams has also appealed to the White House for help with the migrant crisis, emphasizing the significant cost it will impose on the city. Adams has expressed frustration with the lack of leadership on the issue and has been actively seeking federal support to handle the surge.

Overall, the growing concerns among Democratic leaders in Illinois and New York, along with other states and cities, highlight the complex and challenging nature of the migrant crisis at the southern border. As migrant crossings continue at historically high levels, the pressure on local communities and the need for federal intervention and support will only intensify.
