U.S. downs Turkish drone in Syria

18:07 05.10.2023

In a significant development in northeastern Syria, U.S. F-16 fighter jets took down an armed Turkish drone after it posed a threat to American troops on the ground. The Pentagon revealed that U.S. commanders had initially spotted the drone during a series of drone strikes conducted by Turkish forces near Hasakah, just one kilometer away from where U.S. troops were stationed. Concerned about the safety of their personnel, troops were immediately sent to their bunkers, and efforts were made to communicate with Turkish commanders. However, as the armed drone approached again, this time coming within half a kilometer of U.S. forces, the decision was made to shoot it down. Brigadier General Patrick Ryder, the Pentagon press secretary, addressed the incident, acknowledging it as regrettable but emphasizing that the decision to shoot down the drone was based on self-defense. He explained, "Based on the observation of airstrikes being conducted and the fact that this drone was upwards of nearly half a kilometer from U.S. commanders made the determination that it was a self-defense threat. Appropriate action was taken."

The incident prompted high-level communication between U.S. and Turkish defense officials. U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin had a fruitful phone call with Turkish Minister of National Defense Yasar Guler, while U.S. General CQ Brown, the newly appointed chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, engaged in a conversation with General Metin Gurak, chief of the general staff of the Turkish armed forces. The focus of these calls was the importance of adhering to common deconfliction protocols to ensure the safety of personnel in Syria.

Turkey's series of airstrikes in northern Syria were carried out in response to a terror attack on Sunday, claimed by the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which resulted in the deaths of two police officers at Turkey's Interior Ministry. Both Turkey and the U.S. consider the PKK a terrorist organization. However, Turkey views the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) as an extension of the PKK, while the U.S. has supported the SDF as a crucial partner in the fight against the Islamic State. Ryder clarified the U.S. stance, stating, "When it comes to the PKK, we recognize and have declared the PKK a foreign terrorist organization and again, fully understand Turkey's legitimate right to defend itself."

The Pentagon did not elaborate on why communication between U.S. commanders and Turkish officials failed to prevent the Turkish drone from approaching U.S. forces in an area designated as a restricted operating zone. Furthermore, Ryder emphasized that the U.S. would continue to urge all parties to de-escalate tensions between Turkey and the SDF and other Kurdish groups in northeastern Syria. The priority, he asserted, was to allow U.S. and coalition forces to concentrate on eradicating the remaining cells of the Islamic State terror group in the region. Recognizing Turkey as an important NATO ally and partner, Ryder affirmed, "Turkey does remain a very important and valuable NATO ally and partner to the United States. We have no indication Turkey was intentionally targeting U.S. forces.".
