Tearful teen suspect charged with murder as cops recover knife, sweatshirt after random fatal stabbing of beloved NYC activist

In a shocking turn of events, an 18-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the fatal stabbing of Ryan Carson, a beloved social justice activist in Brooklyn. Brian Dowling, the teenager charged with the murder, was described by his former teacher, Paul Joseph, as a respectful pupil who recently graduated from high school. Joseph, who taught Dowling in his senior English documentary film class, personally congratulated him at his graduation and expressed his disbelief at the accusations. "He was a respectful young man. So I don't know what happened," Joseph said.

Dowling was apprehended on Thursday when police found a knife believed to be the murder weapon and a sweatshirt matching the one seen in surveillance footage of the attack at his home. Photos of Dowling being escorted from the 81st Precinct stationhouse show tears streaming down his face, with handcuffs around his wrists and ankles.

The arrest brought some relief to Carson's family, with his father, Ken Carson, expressing his gratitude on Facebook. "Assailant has been caught," he wrote. "More details will follow. I'm on the road escorting Ryan home to Massachusetts right now. I wasn't leaving NYC without him."

The attack occurred in the early hours of Monday morning near a bus stop in Bedford-Stuyvesant. Carson and his girlfriend were returning from a wedding when they were confronted by the assailant. Surveillance footage captured the assailant yelling threats at Carson before a scuffle broke out. Carson was eventually stabbed three times and collapsed on the ground. The attacker then turned on his girlfriend and spat on her. A woman who appeared to know the suspect begged him not to harm Carson, repeatedly mentioning the name "Brian."

Carson tragically succumbed to a stab wound that pierced his heart. He would have turned 32 on the day of Dowling's arrest. Police had identified the suspect prior to the arrest but were waiting for sufficient evidence to make an arrest. The suspect had been seen engaging in destructive behavior, kicking over and damaging mopeds and scooters on the sidewalk.

Dowling, who works at a high school in Clinton Hill, had three summonses issued against him in 2022 and was a victim of robbery in 2021. He was also involved in a July incident where his aunt described him as mentally disturbed during a 911 call. Despite this, people who knew Dowling, such as Eric Riddick, described him as a good kid with no previous red flags. Riddick emphasized the importance of examining Dowling's mental state in light of the accusations.

Neighbors expressed shock upon learning of Dowling's arrest, with one resident questioning why he was carrying a knife in the early hours of the morning. However, they also acknowledged the influence of external factors on young individuals today. Riccardo Sanchez remarked, "Today with the young kids you know, they get all their stuff from the internet, all these bad influences, and they don't wanna hear what we got to say."

As the case unfolds, the community is left grappling with the tragic loss of Ryan Carson and the alleged involvement of a teenager who was known to be respectful and recently graduated from high school. The investigation will undoubtedly shed more light on the circumstances surrounding this senseless act of violence.
