Indiana lawmaker brandishes gun at students advocating for gun control

05:20 01.02.2024

In a shocking incident at the Indiana Statehouse, Republican Rep. Jim Lucas flashed his holstered gun at a group of high school students who were advocating for gun reform. The incident was captured on video by one of the students and has since sparked controversy and concerns about safety.

The students, members of Students Demand Action, were visiting the Statehouse as part of an annual Advocacy Day to urge lawmakers to take action on gun violence. However, their encounter with Rep. Lucas took a disturbing turn when he opened his coat to reveal the firearm holstered at his waist.

"I'm carrying [a gun] right now," Lucas can be heard saying in the video. One of the students quickly responds, "See, nothing about that makes me feel safe though. It makes me feel threatened." The students expressed feeling unsafe and threatened by the lawmaker's actions.

Lucas, who has faced controversy in the past for his views on gun control and racist social media posts, dismissed the suggestion that he was threatening the students. He argued that he was simply showing an inanimate object and that people should be able to handle adult situations when having adult conversations.

However, the students and advocates for safer schools were quick to condemn Lucas' behavior. Indiana Democratic Party Chair Mike Schmuhl criticized the lawmaker, stating that Indiana Republicans prioritize the interests of the gun lobby over the safety of students. He called for accountability and a reevaluation of their power.

This incident highlights the ongoing debate over gun control and the need for a safer environment in schools. While lawmakers and their staff are allowed to carry handguns in the Statehouse, the students felt uneasy and disturbed by Lucas' actions, perceiving it as a threat.

The video has sparked a larger conversation about the role of guns in society and the need for stricter gun laws. It also raises questions about the responsibility of lawmakers in addressing the concerns and fears of their constituents, particularly young students who are directly affected by the issue of gun violence.

As the debate continues, it remains to be seen how this incident will impact future discussions on gun control and the safety of students in Indiana and across the country.
