U.S. Deploys Naval Forces in Eastern Mediterranean Amid Hamas Conflict

14:29 08.10.2023

In response to the unprecedented attack on Israel by Hamas terrorists, the United States has taken immediate action to support its ally. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin announced on Sunday that he has ordered American military ships, including the USS Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier, to move closer to the eastern Mediterranean. This decision was made following detailed discussions with President Biden about the Hamas attack that has already claimed the lives of at least 600 Israelis.

The USS Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group, which includes the largest warship in the world, will be joined by the Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruiser USS Normandy, as well as four Arleigh-Burke-class guided missile destroyers. These warships have been directed to the Eastern Mediterranean to bolster regional deterrence efforts and support the Israel Defense Forces. Additionally, the United States will be rapidly providing Israel with additional equipment and resources, including munitions.

Secretary Austin emphasized that the United States maintains ready forces globally to further reinforce this deterrence posture if required. This move to strengthen the Department of Defense's posture in the region underscores the United States' ironclad support for the Israel Defense Forces and the Israeli people. Secretary Austin and his team will continue to maintain close contact with their Israeli counterparts to ensure they have the necessary support to protect their citizens and defend themselves against these heinous terrorist attacks.

President Biden has also been vocal in affirming Israel's right to defend itself. In the wake of Saturday's surprise attack, which has already killed at least 600 Israelis and wounded over 2,000 more, President Biden has expressed his unwavering support for Israel. The Pentagon, however, has not clarified whether military force will be used to assist Israel in the conflict.

The announcement of the deployment of warships and aircraft came shortly after President Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke on Sunday morning. They discussed the taking of Israeli hostages by Hamas, with President Biden assuring Prime Minister Netanyahu that assistance for the Israel Defense Forces was on its way, with more to follow in the coming days. The two leaders emphasized the need for all countries to stand united against terrorism and brutality.

The first movement of U.S. security aid to the Israel Defense Forces will begin on Sunday and is expected to arrive in the coming days. Israeli officials have confirmed that over 600 civilians and military personnel have already lost their lives in the attacks, with another 1,800 wounded. There are reports that many Israelis, both civilians and security forces, have been taken hostage by Hamas. Israeli ambassador Michael Herzog has expressed concern that Americans may also be among the hostages.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken has stated that the U.S. is actively investigating these reports. Although there is no serious planning for the evacuation of American citizens at this time, the situation is being closely monitored by U.S. officials.

The conflict has also taken a toll on the Palestinian side, with the Gaza Ministry of Health reporting that 370 Palestinians have died and 2,200 have been wounded.

As the situation continues to unfold, the United States remains committed to supporting Israel and ensuring the safety and security of its citizens. The deployment of warships and additional resources demonstrates the United States' strong solidarity with Israel and its determination to stand against terrorism.
