Airlines halt flights to Israel in response to Hamas attack

21:50 09.10.2023

Multiple Leading international airlines have suspended or reduced flights to Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion airport, the capital of Israel, in response to the ongoing conflict with Hamas and escalating attacks on Gaza. On Sunday, about half of all scheduled flights at the airport did not operate, and a third were cancelled as of Monday evening.

The decision to suspend flights came after Palestinian militant group Hamas launched a large-scale surprise attack on Israel, resulting in hundreds of casualties and thousands of injuries. United Airlines, American Airlines, and Delta Air Lines have all temporarily suspended flights to and from Ben Gurion International Airport. United Airlines spokesperson Katie Krupnik stated that future operations at the airport will be suspended until conditions allow them to resume. Delta and American Airlines also announced that operations to Israel had been suspended at least until Sunday.

Other major airlines that have canceled flights to Tel Aviv include Air France, Lufthansa, Emirates, Ryanair, and Aegean Airlines. However, commercial air links with Eilat, Israel's second international airport and a tourist destination on the Red Sea, have not been affected. Lufthansa, for example, has canceled all flights to and from Tel Aviv until Monday, while Brussels Airlines, part of the Lufthansa group, has also canceled its Tel Aviv flights until further notice. Air France has halted flights to Tel Aviv indefinitely and is allowing customers to postpone or cancel their trips free of charge.

Additional airlines that have canceled flights to Tel Aviv include Transavia, the low-cost carrier of the Air France-KLM group, Iberia Express, the budget subsidiary of Spanish airline Iberia, and ITA Airways, Italy's flag-carrier. Polish carrier LOT has also canceled its flights from Warsaw on Saturday, and Russian authorities have banned night flights to Israel. Regulators such as the US Federal Aviation Authority, the European Union Aviation Safety Agency, and Israel's aviation authority have urged airlines to exercise caution when flying in Israeli airspace but have not yet suspended flights.

The situation in Israel and Gaza remains volatile, with ongoing air raids and bombings leading to dozens of casualties and injuries in refugee camps. Thousands of Gaza residents have sought refuge in UN schools to protect themselves from these attacks. The war with Hamas has caused significant disruptions to daily life, and the conflict shows no signs of abating. As a result, the aviation industry continues to monitor the security situation closely, adjusting flight operations to prioritize the safety and security of passengers and crew.
