7-year-old girl killed, 7 wounded in Chicago mass shooting

17:06 14.04.2024

A tragic shooting in Chicago's Back of the Yards neighborhood on Saturday evening left one child dead and seven others injured, including two young children. The incident, believed to be gang-related, occurred near West 52nd Street and South Damen Avenue at around 9:18 p.m. during a family gathering. According to Chicago Police Department Deputy Chief Don Jerome, a 7-year-old girl was shot in the head and died at the scene, while a 1-year-old boy and a 7-year-old boy were critically injured after being shot multiple times.

In addition to the children, five adults between the ages of 19 and 40 were also wounded in the shooting. Police officers who responded to a ShotSpotter alert of 18 rounds fired provided life-saving care to the victims by applying tourniquets and chest seals. Witnesses reported seeing a black sedan approach the scene before shots were fired into the crowd, but no arrests have been made yet.

Jerome emphasized that this was not a random act of violence but likely gang-related. He condemned the actions of the shooters as "horrific and unacceptable in our city," especially considering that three innocent children were among the victims. Area One detectives are actively investigating the incident, and police are urging anyone with information to come forward.

This tragic incident highlights the ongoing issue of gun violence in Chicago and across the United States, with firearms now being the leading cause of death among American children and teenagers. The number of gun deaths among youth has risen significantly in recent years, underscoring the urgent need for effective measures to address this public health crisis.
