Minnesota man's massive 2,749lb pumpkin secures world record

08:45 10.10.2023

Travis Gienger, a 43-year-old horticulture teacher from Anoka, Minnesota, achieved this remarkable feat at the 50th World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off in Half Moon Bay, California. Gienger's extraordinary pumpkin, which he affectionately named "Michael Jordan," not only secured him the title of world record-holder but also earned him a well-deserved $30,000 prize.

The awe-inspiring pumpkin, characterized by its lumpy, orange appearance, has the potential to produce a staggering 687 pies. Gienger's dedication to his craft and years of experience growing pumpkins played a significant role in his victory. With almost three decades of pumpkin-growing under his belt, he was thrilled to have exceeded his own expectations.

"I was not expecting that. It was quite the feeling," Gienger expressed, his voice brimming with excitement. Inspired by his father, who also dabbled in pumpkin cultivation, Gienger ventured into this passion as a teenager. This year, he decided to go the extra mile, providing his plants with meticulous care and attention. He watered them up to 12 times a day and provided them with an abundance of nourishment and fertilizer.

Gienger's determination and hard work have paid off handsomely over the years. Last year, he set a new U.S. record for growing the heaviest pumpkin, and now he has conquered the world stage. This victory marks his third triumph in Half Moon Bay's giant pumpkin contests, solidifying his status as a legend in the field. His ability to bring joy to people's faces through his pumpkins is a driving force behind his relentless efforts.

"I put in the work so that I can put a smile on people's faces, and it's just so nice coming out here to see everyone in this town," Gienger shared, his humble demeanor shining through.

The record-breaking pumpkin, along with its three runner-ups, will be proudly displayed in Half Moon Bay, where they will be available for public viewing during the city's Art and Pumpkin Festival. Visitors will have the opportunity to take memorable photos with Gienger and the colossal gourd, basking in the glory of his remarkable achievement.

Gienger's triumph is a testament to the indomitable spirit of human determination and passion. As he returns to his horticulture teaching duties at Anoka Technical College, he leaves behind a legacy that will be etched into the history books of pumpkin-growing, inspiring future enthusiasts to dream big and reach for the stars.
