Sumo Legend Akebono Taro Dies at 54

04:14 11.04.2024

Akebono Taro, the Hawaii-born sumo wrestler who made history as the first foreign-born wrestler to reach the level of grand champion in Japan, has passed away at the age of 54. The news of his death was confirmed by his family in a statement obtained from the office of Hawaii Gov. Josh Green. Akebono, whose real name was Chad Rowan, died of heart failure while receiving care at a hospital in the Tokyo area earlier this month.

Akebono moved to Tokyo in the late 1980s and quickly rose to fame in the sumo wrestling world, winning his first grand championship in 1993. Standing at an impressive 6-feet-8 and weighing 500 pounds at the peak of his career, Akebono was a true giant in the sport. He went on to win a total of 11 grand championships before retiring in 2001.

The United States ambassador to Japan, Rahm Emanuel, expressed his condolences on social media, praising Akebono as a "giant in the world of sumo" and a "bridge between the United States and Japan." Akebono's legacy extends beyond his accomplishments in the ring, as he helped pave the way for other foreign wrestlers to find success in the sport.

Akebono is survived by his wife, daughter, and two sons. The family's statement mentioned that a "private celebration of his life" will be held in honor of the sumo legend. His passing marks the end of an era in the world of sumo wrestling, but his legacy will continue to inspire future generations of wrestlers.
