Former NFL defensive back Sergio Brown has been arrested in connection with the murder of his 73-year-old mother, Myrtle Brown, last month. Brown, who played for teams including the New England Patriots and Indianapolis Colts, was taken into custody by San Diego police after re-entering the country from Mexico. He is currently being held in San Diego and will be extradited to Illinois to face a first-degree murder charge.
The incident began when Myrtle Brown's body was discovered near a creek behind her home in Maywood, a suburb of Chicago. Members of the Brown family alerted authorities when they were unable to reach Brown or his mother. Sergio Brown had been missing since her body was found. The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office ruled her death a homicide due to multiple injuries sustained from an assault.
Brown's arrest comes after videos surfaced on Instagram showing a man resembling him denying reports about his mother's death and claiming she was on vacation in Mexico. TMZ also obtained videos of a man they identified as Brown partying in Tulum, Mexico. However, Brown was apprehended while re-entering the US from Mexico and is now awaiting extradition.
Sergio Brown, 35, had a successful football career, playing for the University of Notre Dame before joining the NFL. He played for various teams over seven seasons, including the Patriots, Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars, Atlanta Falcons, and Buffalo Bills.
