Man carjacked rideshare driver after argument over whether his dog could be in the car, Washington police say

In a shocking incident in Washington, D.C., a 19-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly carjacking a rideshare driver's vehicle after an argument over his pet dog. The suspect, identified as Dax Franco Willis, is now facing charges of unarmed carjacking and robbery, as reported by the Metropolitan Police Department.

The incident took place on Sunday morning around 7 a.m. when an Uber driver picked up Willis in the 300 block of Eastern Avenue, Northeast. However, trouble began when Willis attempted to bring his dog into the car, a violation of the company's policy. The driver informed him that pets were not allowed, and this is when the situation took an alarming turn.

According to police, Willis became aggressive and threatened to use pepper spray on the driver. Matters quickly escalated, leading to an assault on the driver. The suspect allegedly dragged her out of the vehicle, stole her phone, and fled the scene in her car. The traumatized victim immediately reported the incident to the authorities.

Despite not being identified at the time, Willis was caught on the car's dash camera footage, which was later released by the police on Tuesday with hopes that the public could help identify him. Just a day later, Willis was apprehended by law enforcement officials and was charged with unarmed carjacking and robbery.

While the rideshare company, Uber, did not respond immediately to requests for comment regarding the incident, they have policies in place for passengers traveling with pets. The company's website states that drivers are required to accept service animals but have the discretion to refuse non-service animals. Uber also has a pet-friendly ride option called "Uber Pet," where passengers can pay a little extra to bring their pets along for the trip.

As of now, Willis remains in custody at a local police station, and it is unclear if he has secured legal representation. The victim, who endured a traumatic experience, is hopefully finding solace in the fact that justice is swiftly being pursued. This alarming incident serves as a reminder of the potential dangers faced by rideshare drivers, and the need for companies like Uber to ensure the safety of both their drivers and passengers.
