Former NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre ordered to pay $5m in corruption case

19:13 23.02.2024

After a seven-week long civil corruption trial in New York City, a Manhattan jury found Wayne LaPierre, the former CEO of the National Rifle Association, liable for diverting millions of dollars away from the organization to live luxuriously. The jury ruled that LaPierre, along with other current and former executives, failed to properly manage the NRA's finances and assets between March 20, 2014 and May 2, 2022. New York Attorney General Letitia James, who brought the lawsuit against the NRA, accused LaPierre and others of enriching themselves at the expense of the organization. The jury found that LaPierre caused $5.4 million in monetary harm to the NRA, although he has already repaid $1 million of that amount. Phillips, the former treasurer and CFO, was found to have caused $2 million in monetary harm, while Frazer, the current general counsel, did not cause any monetary harm. Despite the verdict, none of the defendants have been criminally charged as part of the lawsuit. Judge Joel Cohen will now decide on potential remedies, including whether LaPierre and the other defendants should be permanently barred from serving on the board of any charity in New York. The NRA, which has been operating as a nonprofit charitable corporation in New York since 1871, has seen a decline in membership and influence in recent years. The organization's membership has dropped to 4.2 million from nearly 6 million five years ago, with membership dues decreasing by $14 million from 2021 to 2022. In a statement, Attorney General James called the verdict a "major victory" in holding LaPierre and the NRA accountable for their actions. LaPierre, who resigned as CEO in January, ignored reporters as he left the courthouse surrounded by police officers. The case against the NRA and its leaders is ongoing, with potential further consequences for the organization and its executives.
