Kansas Chiefs' Justyn Ross arrested on felony damage and battery charges

17:21 24.10.2023

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Justyn Ross has been arrested and is facing multiple charges related to a domestic violence incident that occurred in Shawnee, Kansas. According to the Johnson County Sheriff's Office, Ross was initially charged with criminal damage of over $25,000. However, it has been reported that he is now facing two misdemeanor charges of domestic battery and criminal damage to property totaling less than $1,000.

The arrest took place on Monday afternoon, and Ross was taken into custody at around 2:30 p.m. local time. He was subsequently booked at 4:27 p.m. on the felony damage charge. The victim in the alleged incident has been identified as someone Ross "is or has been in a dating relationship" with. Property damage listed in the criminal complaint includes a laptop, phone, computer monitor, jewelry, and a car key. Dispatch calls suggest that the victim accused Ross of "dragging her through" the house.

The case has now been handed over to the District Attorney's Office, and Ross is expected to appear in court to face formal charges. The Kansas City Star has reported that Ross is facing two misdemeanor charges, indicating that he has no prior convictions for domestic battery. The Chiefs have acknowledged the arrest but have declined to comment on the matter. Similarly, Ross's representatives have not responded to requests for comment.

Ross, a wide receiver out of Clemson, joined the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent in 2022. He missed the entire previous season due to a foot injury. The 23-year-old player had previously undergone cervical fusion surgery to treat a congenital condition known as Klippel-Feil syndrome, which caused numbness in his arms after a routine hit during practice at Clemson. Despite initial expectations that he would not be able to continue playing football, Ross underwent successful surgery and returned to the field in 2021.

Unfortunately, Ross suffered another injury in 2021, fracturing his foot after only playing 10 games. Only four NFL teams cleared him to play, and the Chiefs signed him as an undrafted free agent last year. However, he was placed on the season-ending injured reserve before the 2022 training camp period began. Ross has played in all seven games this season, recording three catches for 34 yards.

The Chiefs and Ross's agent have yet to comment on the recent arrest. The Associated Press has contributed to this report.
